BOONE COUNTY, Ky. – Authorities in Kentucky are warning parents of a kidnapping scam.The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says the ruse is commonly known as a “virtual kidnapping ransom scam,” and victims describe it as terrifying and very realistic.Two separate families reported that they received random phone calls from a foreign phone number on Monday and Tuesday. When the parents answered, they heard who they thought were their children saying, “They have me” and “I’m in a van,” according to the sheriff’s office.During the first incident, officers say the purported kidnapper told a father, “If you want to see your daughter again, follow my instructions.” He quickly disconnected the call and contacted his wife, who then confirmed that their daughter was safe and still at school.The second call reportedly included similar threats, along with additional demands. The sheriff’s office says the alleged kidnapper demanded, “All the money you have” and followed up with a threat, saying a mother's child would be killed if she hung up on him.While keeping the culprit on the phone, the mother was able to contact deputies who confirmed that her child was safe and still at school.If you or a loved one receives one of these calls, the sheriff’s office says it’s important to remain calm and immediately begin taking the steps to verify the whereabouts of your child.“It is also recommended for everyone to check their social media privacy settings and to verify what information can be viewed by the public on these accounts,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “This information could be used against you to make the scam seem more realistic.” 1656

As the number of lung illness cases involving people who vape continues to grow, one city is telling people to stop using immediately.Now, vaping company Juul says it’s making it harder for younger people to buy their e-cigarettes.Sixteen people were hospitalized in Wisconsin with chemical pneumonia that doctors believe was caused by vaping. There have been 200 cases across the country.Despite the FDA declaring teen vaping as an epidemic, the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association (CASAA) says vaping is still a better option than smoking."Flavorings and the base ingredients in e-liquid products made with nicotine are all alcohol base; those products don't cause this lipoid pneumonia,” says Alex Clark with CASAA.However, Clark says the problem causing these lung issues comes from users buying THC-filled cartridges from underground dealers.CASAA believes the black market manufacturers could be putting dangerous chemicals into illegal vaping products.This week, Juul’s CEO Kevin Burns told CBS This Morning these health reports are worrisome.The company announced it’s working with e-cigarette vendors to implement an ID verification system that prohibits cashiers from selling to underage shoppers and limits the amount customers can buy.Clark says he’s concerned more restriction on vaping products could lead to bigger problems. He things regulations could lead to underground market sales.Health departments and hospitals are continuing their research on legal vaping products to see if there is a link to lung-related issues.Meanwhile, Clark advises users to "purchase from legitimate retailers that you know and trust. While blue light exposure has been known to cause strain in eyes, Oregon State University researchers studied the effect of blue light exposure on aging. Based on to their findings, exposure to blue light could cause aging to accelerate. For their study, researchers used common fruit flies and exposed them to 12 hours of blue LED light and 12 hours of darkness. To compare, researchers kept a group of flies in total darkness, as well as a group of flies that were exposed to light that had the blue wavelengths filtered out. The researchers said they chose fruit flies because their cellular and developmental mechanisms are similar to humans.The researchers said that flies exposed to blue LED light sustained damage to their retinal cells and brain neurons and had impaired locomotion. Even more stunning, some of the flies, which exhibited some brain damage, were mutants that did not develop eyes."The fact that the light was accelerating aging in the flies was very surprising to us at first,” said Jaga Giebultowicz, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State. “We’d measured expression of some genes in old flies, and found that stress-response, protective genes were expressed if flies were kept in light. "We hypothesized that light was regulating those genes. Then we started asking, 'what is it in the light that is harmful to them,' and we looked at the spectrum of light. It was very clear cut that although light without blue slightly shortened their lifespan, just blue light alone shortened their lifespan very dramatically.” 1708
