The South Korean government says thousands of BMWs will be banned from the country's roads after some vehicles caught fire.The German automaker is facing a public relations crisis in South Korea over the fires, which it has blamed on a problem with the cars' exhaust systems.BMW recalled more than 100,000 vehicles in South Korea last month and has been carrying out emergency inspections. It expanded the checks to Europe last week.As of late Monday, more than 27,000 of the affected BMWs in South Korea still hadn't been checked, according to the South Korean government."Our citizens are deeply concerned," Transportation Minister Kim Hyun-mee said Tuesday. She ordered local authorities to ban people from driving any of the potentially fire-prone BMWs that haven't been brought in for checks. 805

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USPSC) announced Wednesday that it is issuing a recall of Xtava Allure hair dryers due to concerns that they could catch fire or deliver electrical shocks.According to the USPSC, the recall affects more than 200,000 hair dryers.Nearly 200 people have reported the dryers and power cords have either "overheated, melted, exploded or caught fire" while in use. Eighteen people sustained burns while using the product, with one of those being classified as a "severe" burn.The dryers were sold online at Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Groupon, in addition to Xtava's own website. They were sold individually or in a hair care pack that included "treatment products, a flat iron or a diffuser."The affected products include the following SKU numbers on a label on the back:  XTV010001, XTV010001N, XTV010002, or XTV010002N.Those with the dryers should contact Xtava directly. The United States has set another record for new coronavirus cases. More than 50,000 new cases were reported Wednesday, a single day record.For comparison, it took over two months to record that number of cases nationwide when the pandemic started.New cases have increased in at least 37 states over the past week. But Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's not too late to turn the surge around."It does not have to be 100,000 cases a day,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “I used that number because I wanted to jolt people. If you leave the virus to its own devices, it will take off on you."The stark numbers have prompted state officials to issue warnings about gatherings for the Fourth of July weekend. Doctors say it could be a “perfect storm” for another spike.The mayor of Houston fears hospitals could reach capacity by mid-July if people don't help change the trajectory."Unless the behavior changes and people will engage in social distancing and wearing their masks and proper hygiene, there could reach a point where they are really at their limit," said Mayor Sylvester Turner. 1153

The San Francisco 49ers released linebacker Reuben Foster on Sunday morning, hours after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge at a Tampa, Florida, hotel.Foster, 24, was arrested after Tampa Police officers responded to the Grand Hyatt hotel shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from the City of Tampa. The former first-round NFL draft pick was charged with one count of first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail, the release says.Police said Foster's 28-year-old female companion reported that he "slapped her phone out of her hand, pushed her in the chest area, and slapped her with an open hand on the right side of her face."Officers observed a one-inch scratch on the woman's left collarbone, the release states. Investigating officers learned that Foster and the woman had lived together in the past and were in an on-again, off-again relationship over the past three years, the release says.The 49ers released Foster just hours before their scheduled game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.It was unclear Sunday morning whether Foster has retained an attorney.A college star at Alabama, Foster was the 31st overall pick in last year's NFL draft but has had several arrests since.He was charged with felony domestic violence in April for allegedly attacking his girflriend in February at their home, leaving her bruised and with a ruptured eardrum, the Santa Clara County District Attorney said. The charges were dismissed after the victim recanted her story, although the Santa Clara DA's office said the evidence demonstrated he "seriously hurt his girlfriend."The NFL had suspended him without pay for the first two games of this season in relation to a weapons offense and a misdemeanor drug offense which were resolved earlier this year, the 49ers said in a statement on its website."I accept the League's decision and am sorry that my mistakes have hurt my team," Foster said in July when the suspension was announced. "I have a responsibility to the 49ers, our fans and our community, and I am committed to learning from this situation and making better choices in the future. The skies over several US states and Ontario, Canada, lit up briefly on Wednesday as a presumed fireball streaked over the daytime sky.Despite the midday sun, the fireball was clearly visible in videos captured at the time of the event.According to the American Meteor Society, dozens of eyewitnesses reported seeing the fireball shortly after 12 p.m. ET. The reports were clustered around Lake Ontario, but the organization received reports from Michigan, Ohio, and even as far away as Maryland and Virginia.An eyewitness in Ohio reported to the American Meteor Society, “It was like a ball of fire with a tail...surreal to see in the daytime.”Another eyewitness in Ontario said, “Astonishing, amazing, still get goosebumps talking about it.”What caused the bright flash hasn’t been confirmed, but is presumed to be a meteor. Meteors are not uncommon events, as small rocks and objects enter the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis.
