SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A longtime North Park business has been forced to shutter its doors due to the economic toll of the pandemic.A&B Sporting Goods has sat on University Ave. for 79 years. The business told ABC 10News that it thrives off of local youth sports, which have largely been canceled this year due to the coronavirus.Owner Greg Schloss, whose father and grandfather worked at the store before him, said he hadn't planned on closing shop, but could not keep the business going any longer."I've worked here 40 years. The neighborhood is driven by a lot of kids playing ball in this neigborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes involving minors.Chula Vista police said they received anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers on April 9, 2020, “regarding an unidentified adult male suspect, who engaged in sex acts with an underage victim. Investigators were able to identify the suspect and also determine that there were two additional underage victims.”During the probe, investigators identified the suspect, 27-year-old Jaylen Fleer, as a correctional deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.According to CVPD officials, Fleer surrendered to investigators on Wednesday, July 22. After being processed at CVPD headquarters, he was transported to the sheriff’s Vista Jail.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show Fleer was booked on 15 charges, including oral copulation with a person under 16, luring a minor for a sex offense, and sending harmful material to seduce a minor.Chula Vista police noted that the sheriff’s department “cooperated and assisted with the investigation.”In a statement, the San Diego Sheriff Department said that Fleer was placed on administrative assignment when the department was made aware of the possible incident and that because of the seriousness of the allegations, his authority as a peace officer was taken away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A lifelong San Diego resident says he's sick of seeing overgrown brush in local medians — and he's willing to put himself in the weeds to resolve it.Adam Huntington says the weeds are giving local beach towns a bad look."Great people, great vibes, unfortunately our aesthetics aren't matching up to the great vibes right now," Huntington says. Next to a traffic sign, he says, "the weed was literally growing this high all around this."While some may be used to the weeds sprouting from Mission Blvd. medians, Huntington said he can't ignore the eyesore anymore. "I don't think anyone wants to see their beach look like this when the come to visit it," Huntington said.So the mortgage loan officer has been cleaning up the medians in his spare time. He first uses a weed wacker to cut down the brush, then rakes out the weeds, and finally sweeps and cleans them up. He's been posting his progress on social media. And it's not just Mission Beach.Clairemont Lutheran Church is doing similar work, organizing volunteers to clean up overgrown medians.Huntington has complained to the city and is frustrated with their response. But officials tell us they are trying to make this issue a priority.The mayor's allocated over a million dollars for vegetation and brush abatement in the current fiscal year. With that money the city has cleaned up weeds on 42 miles of median, completing more than 200 requests since July 1. The city blames excessive weed and vegetation growth to the wet winter and spring. Huntington plans to tackle other areas of the city, and says he'd be pleasantly surprised if the city beats him to it. 1646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. I need to do that, he triggered this desire in me to pay this forward.” Yezarski hopes the young man realizes the power of his generosity. “I would want to tell him ‘you’re awesome’, you are just an amazing person and just thank you because you started something that really touched a lot of people,” she said. 1848
