Justice Brett Kavanaugh, fresh off a confirmation process that featured one of the most polarizing and politicized hearings in modern times, will take the bench on Tuesday for the start of a new era that is expected to take the court decidedly to the right."I was not appointed to serve one party or one interest, but to serve one nation," Kavanaugh said Monday night during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House."America's Constitution and laws protect every person of every belief and every background," he said.Kavanaugh, 53, began work immediately after his official swearing-in on Saturday evening even as protesters stormed the front steps of the Supreme Court and pounded on the 13-ton bronze doors, furious that he had been confirmed despite a decades-old allegation of sexual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford. 842

Keisha Lance Bottoms, Atlanta’s Democratic mayor who has seen a rise in her national profile in recent months, said Monday she has tested positive for COVID-19.Bottoms said she is not experiencing any symptoms from the virus. The Associated Press, among other outlets, have reported Bottoms is under consideration by Joe Biden to be his running mate this fall in the presidential election. Bottoms’ national profile has increased amid national unrest following the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day.Last month, Atlanta had an incident of its own as an Atlanta Police officer shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, who was attempting to flee from officers from an arrest in a Wendy’s parking lot. Bottoms was forced to respond to increased unrest in the city, and the firing of the officer involved in the incident.Despite the COVID-19 diagnosis, she continued to do on-camera interviews via webcam with news agencies, including CNN on Monday.“COVID-19 has literally hit home. I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive,” Bottoms tweeted Monday afternoon. 1064

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (KGTV) - Multiple people are dead, and injured after a fellow gamer fired about a dozen rounds in the middle of a tournament in Florida. A gaming expert says there was limited security.Gayle Dickie, CEO of Gamer World News, said these kinds of tournaments happen all over the world and all the time."This is horrifying, really," she said. The shots rang out on the second and final day of the Madden 19 Tournament. Players entered Chicago Pizza on the first floor of Jacksonville Landing and Dickie said there was little security, "It's unfortunate because it was a smaller event, I mean it wasn't a large event. If you go to events like the Barclay's Center or Staple's, you're going to go through a metal detector."Inside, gamers entered their own world, "it is probably the biggest quality of a gamer, to have that intense focus, so everybody was focused on gameplay." Dickie said that made it easy for 24-year-old David Katz to find his targets."It sounds like he knew who he was going after, so you know and you saw the two players sitting there. I saw the video and you can see them sitting there, and it didn't take him long, you know, obviously he knew what he was looking for," she said.Dickie said gamers can be as young as 12-years-old at these competitions."It's just shaken the core of the gamer community. No one would ever think that something like this would happen," she said.Dickie said the gaming world provides a place for everyone to find a niche community to which they belong. Now she hopes everyone watches out for one another."I think this will be the focal point of being aware of your surroundings no matter where you are," she said. 1721

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. RELATED: City of San Diego moves forward with undergrounding more power linesThe project is part of SDG&E’s effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and shutting down power during windy weather. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. RELATED: Map: City of San Diego underground utility lines“To put all those lines underground is gonna be a major undertaking,” said resident Michael Lang. Phase two of the project will add underground lines along the 78. Currently, there is no timeline on when the project will begin. 1308
