The Florida Highway Patrol said 30-to-40 vehicles have flat tires Monday morning on Interstate 95 northbound from Lantana Road to the Okeechobee Boulevard exit in West Palm Beach. The vehicles have flat tires due to metal debris in the road from a semi.All of the vehicles are off to the side of the interstate.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach flew over the area and did not spot any lane closures, but traffic is traveling slow in the area.Drivers should avoid using I-95 northbound in this area until all of the debris is cleaned up.  596

The Carr Fire raging in Northern California is so large and hot that it is creating its own localized weather system with variable strong winds, making it difficult for experts to predict which way the blaze will spread.At least 19 people were still reported missing in Shasta County, California, officials said at a community meeting Monday evening, after shifting winds, dry fuel and steep terrain helped the monstrous fire engulf more than 103,000 acres.The fire has claimed six lives, including a firefighter and bulldozer operator working to extinguish the blaze.Authorities have received 48 missing person reports but 29 people have since been found safe, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko.The fire, which started a week ago, has burned 103,772 acres and is just 23% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire. The City of San Diego was awarded a million state grant that will help save food, save the planet, and save people.  The city will use a majority of the grant to convert its composting system at the Miramar Landfill into a closed system.  A news release from the city said that will reduce air emissions and continue to divert tons of food waste from the landfill.The City of San Diego currently keeps more than 100,000 tons of food waste out of the landfill by composting or making sure it’s diverted to food rescue non-profits before it’s thrown away.“It’s getting tossed because people don’t find the need for it or it’s got a slight cosmetic defect,” said Aviva Paley of Kitchens for Good, a food rescue that feeds hundreds of people a day by using food that could have been thrown away.“You can still make really good food with stuff that you just have to clean it up a little bit,” said Kitchens for Good Chef Trainer Theron Fisher.“It is so heartbreaking to see how much food goes to waste in this country,” said Paley.A portion of the state grant will allow Kitchens for Good to expand its operation.  It fed 35,000 people in 2016.  It would like to feed more than 50,000 by 2018.It would keep more food out of the landfill and feed more people who need meals.  Paley said one in six San Diegans go hungry every day.Another benefit for the Kitchens for Good program:  The cooks who prepare the meals are going through a 12-week training program to prepare them for culinary careers.  Paley said most of the participants have overcome obstacles from crime and drugs to mental disabilities.  The program opens them to a career they could otherwise never reach. 1718

The former chief administrative officer for the Department of Housing and Urban Development says she was demoted in part for refusing to spend more than was legally allowed to redecorate Secretary Ben Carson's new office.In a November 2017 complaint obtained by CNN, Helen Foster said she was told to "find money" beyond the legal ,000 limit for redecorating. In one instance, she says a supervisor said that ",000 will not even buy a decent chair."Foster's sworn complaint with the Office of Special Counsel, the independent agency charged with investigating whistleblower complaints made by government employees, says that after she refused to misuse taxpayer dollars for the office redecoration project she was "retaliated against by being taken out of my position as Chief Administrative Officer."She says that HUD's Acting Secretary Craig Clemmensen pulled her aside more than a month before Carson's March confirmation and told her that Carson's wife, Candy, wanted to "help the Secretary redecorate his office suite." Clemmensen asked Foster to assist with "getting Mrs. Carson access and funds for the project," the complaint states.Foster said she told Clemmensen that legally, the department was limited in how much it could spend on the office redecorating project to ,000, information she says she also passed along to the administrative officer in the Secretary's office. But even so, Foster said she received repeated pressure in multiple conversations to "find money" for the redecorating project in excess of what was legally allowed, including in a one-on-one meeting on February 10.
