SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2015 shooting death of a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont-area gas station convenience store, as well as a shootout with police two days after the killing.Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 34, is charged with murder, robbery, burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the April 16, 2015, death of 48-year-old Eric Schade. Mumin also faces a special circumstance allegation that the killing happened during the course of a robbery, meaning he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted. He's also charged with two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer for opening fire on two arresting officers in an April 18 shootout at a City Heights apartment. At his preliminary hearing, surveillance footage was shown allegedly depicting Mumin inside an Arco am/pm at around 3:45 a.m., pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding cash. The store clerk testified that the robber was wearing a dark beanie and a bandana covering his face. The clerk testified that he put the cash drawer on the counter. But Schade -- a neighborhood regular -- took a swipe at the robber's gun as if to push it out of his face, and Mumin took a step back and shot the victim once in the chest, prosecutors alleged. The footage shows the shooter rifling through the cash drawer, then fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. Two days later, officers tracked Mumin to an apartment complex on Winona Avenue in City Heights. Police officers testified that Mumin hid behind a set of doors in a community room. As a detective tried one of the doors, the defendant opened fire from behind another door, prompting the detectives to return fire, according to testimony.Mumin was shot in the abdomen by police and hospitalized.Co-defendant Adan Ibrahim -- allegedly the getaway driver -- was previously charged with murder, though that count was dismissed earlier this year by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So through application of the state's new felony murder rule. He still faces trial on robbery charges.Ibrahim's girlfriend, Kristine Mariano, was also in the getaway car during the robbery, according to prosecutors. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact earlier this year and awaits sentencing. 2365

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday. It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said. The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back. The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The first of more than a dozen truckloads of sand for an international sand-sculpting competition started arriving at the Broadway Pier and Pavilion in downtown San Diego Monday morning.A total of 15 trucks hauled and dumped 300 tons of specialized sand on the pier for the seventh annual US Sand Sculpting Challenge.Event organizers said top competitors from countries around the world, including the US, Russia, Australia, Italy and others, will attend the event over the Labor Day weekend from Friday, Aug. 31, to Monday, Sept. 3.When completed, sand sculptures will stretch nearly 1000 feet over San Diego Bay, organizers said. The first four truckloads of sand arrived between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, and subsequent loads will arrive in waves throughout the day, according to event organizers. 845

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Poll watchers will be permitted to observe election activities at polling stations countywide on Nov. 3, though COVID-19 related restrictions will limit the number of people allowed inside polling places.Social distancing requirements mean only about one to two observers might be rotated in and out of the polling places at any given time this year, Assistant Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes said Thursday. The number of polling places in San Diego County has been reduced from 1,548 in March to 235 larger polling places that will be open for four days and are each expected to be staffed by about 15 county employees, Paes said. The role of poll watchers has garnered increased attention as part of the national discussion on voter fraud and voter intimidation sparked most recently by President Donald Trump's call at Tuesday's presidential debate for his supporters to monitor polling places on Election Day.Trump, who has frequently raised the specter of voter fraud and publicly expressed doubts over the security of mail-in voting, urged supporters Tuesday to "go into the polls and watch very carefully because that's what has to happen."Tony Krvaric, chair of the San Diego County Republican Party, said recruiting poll watchers is a typical practice, intended to ensure votes are cast and note any irregularities in the voting process."We always recruit for poll watchers and have done so for as long as I can remember," Krvaric told City News Service."Poll watchers help make sure Republicans who haven't voted are contacted and reminded to do so and keep an eye out for any irregularities. This is nothing new. Democrats presumably do the same."Krvaric said any such instances of irregularities are reported to local officials or the Registrar of Voters."Any voter irregularities could dilute legitimate votes cast," he said. Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, said he was confident in the San Diego County Registrar of Voters' ability to ensure a fair election process, saying there are "a number of processes (conducted) to verify a vote."Regarding Trump's allegations of voter fraud related to mail-in voting, Rodriguez-Kennedy called Trump's assertions "a falsehood," based largely in myth.Rodriguez-Kennedy told City News Service "mail ballot voting is safe and secure" and said its presence this election will increase overall voter turnout, something he said represented "a problem for this president."Of Trump's statements at the debate, he said his "intent is to sow discontent because he fears he is losing." 2592

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes increased between September and October while home prices decreased, according to data released by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Sales of single-family homes increased from 1,605 in September to 1,644 in October, a 2.4 percent jump. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October. The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "However, the strength of the economy and the strong job market remains great news for buyers and industries related to real estate."Year-over-year increases show significant declines in listings sold and increases in home prices. Single-family home sales fell 16.8 percent from October 2017 to October 2018, from 1,977 to 1,644. Year-over-year condo and townhome sales fell 15.3 percent, from 1,053 to 892.Sale prices rose 6.3 percent for single-family homes, from 7,000 in October 2017 to 5,000 in October 2018. Condo and townhome prices rose from 0,000 to 8,000 in that same time span, a 4.5 percent increase.Realtors sold 43 single-family homes in Ramona in October, the most of any zip code in the county. 1709
