SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Voters will decide whether a controversial North County housing development goes forward, the Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.After a public hearing, the board voted 4-0 -- Ron Roberts was absent -- to place the Newland Sierra project on the March 3, 2020, ballot. The board's action came two months after a Sept. 26 vote amending several provisions in the county general plan that allowed for Newland Communities to build in the Miriam Mountains area, directly west of Interstate 15 and near the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Vista. The proposed development is in an area noted for wildlife and a tranquil ambience. The development would also feature 81,000 square feet of commercial space, a six-acre school site, 35.87 acres of public and private parks, 19.2 miles of multi- use community trails, an equestrian staging area and 1,209 acres of open space. The project would include numerous eco-friendly features, including solar panels, electric-vehicle charging stations, xeriscaping and gray-water systems, according to the developers. Opponents gathered roughly 117,000 signatures and presented their petition to the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 58-year-old man severely injured after an assault at a home in Clairemont in early April died Monday. According to police, 58-year-old Randy Taing died of his injuries in the evening of April 8. San Diego Police said the incident occurred in the 4100 block of Ashford St. before 12 p.m. The man reportedly called his wife sometime around 11:45 a.m., though his wife said the phone was silent.She asked her son to call, who got through to his dad. That's when the man told his son something along the lines of a possible break-in, police say.The man's son called 9-1-1 and rushed home to find his father with upper body injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but a safe had been taken. Neighbors of the family-owned business a mile away from their home, Rose Donuts, said the safe probably contained cash from the business. A family friend said the father, who he called Randy, was asleep at home during the robbery because he was filling in for his nephew at work. He said he was baking donuts at 2 a.m. while his nephew was on vacation.Customers who work in the area say the family is beloved. "They have two boys and sometimes they even babysit the grand kids while they’re working... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A coffee shop owner in City Heights has planted a handful of coffee trees in his garden. He plans to be at the forefront of the "small-batch coffee" movement growing across San Diego."I'm learning more and more about coffee, and it's just becoming way more intriguing to me, and it's fascinating," says Justin Boone, the owner of Burly and the Bean.Boone says he planted his first tree about 18 months ago, after talking to friends about the idea. He got more interested as he heard of local farms planting the trees in large quantities."I guess it's a little risky," says Boone, "because I really don't know what the outcome is going to be."Boone says his trees won't produce enough beans to harvest for another 2-3 years. But he's excited to taste the first cup from his crop.Meanwhile, coffee is becoming a trendy new crop across the County.Frinj Coffee currently manages around a dozen farms in San Diego that have planted coffee trees. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Weather forecasters are warning of "near-critical fire weather conditions" Sunday evening through Tuesday morning in San Diego County because of developing Santa Ana winds."Areas west of the mountains will see a sharp rise in temperatures early this week," the National Weather Service said, "with coastal locations potentially experiencing their hottest conditions so far this year."Inland areas and especially deserts will remain very warm through Thursday, the NWS said, before widespread cooling takes hold late in the week.Early morning satellite images showed widespread clouds extending to the coastal slopes, but much thinner than Saturday and with less uniform coverage, forecasters said. With clouds breaking up, clearer skies Sunday afternoon will allow temperatures to rise several degrees higher than on Saturday.Santa Ana winds will strengthen on Monday, with maximum gusts of 40 to 45 mph as humidity plummets, resulting in elevated fire weather conditions, the NWS said.
