The human and economic toll of the lockdowns against the coronavirus mounted Thursday as India struggled to feed the multitudes, Italy shut down most of its industry, and a record-shattering 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits in a single week. While world leaders held a virtual summit to grapple with how long to keep the global economy at a standstill to help flatten the rising curve of COVID-19 cases, the damage so far was coming into acute focus. 486

The Dow Jones traded below 20,000 for the first time since 2017 on Tuesday, but appeared to have stemmed some of the bleeding after Monday's 3,000 point loss. After an early peak, the Dow sunk about 200 points shortly after opening, leaving the markets trading at less than 20,000. But as Trump administration officials spoke about their plan to give 362

The growing popularity of online ordering is giving rise to virtual restaurants, conceived only for delivery or take out. Many restaurant owners are whipping up dishes in their own kitchens that can only be accessed through third-party delivery apps like Grubhub and UberEats. Other restaurants are expanding their footprint with "ghost kitchens," where food is prepared for online orders only. The trend seeks to capitalize on the .8 billion online ordering market, the fastest-growing source of restaurant sales in the U.S., according to the NDP group. It also speaks to the power of third-party delivery apps, which have transformed expectations for speed and convenience. In many cases, those same platforms are extending their influence from how people get their food to what should go on the menu. 816

The mother of two missing Idaho children has been arrested in Hawaii. Police on the island of Kauai say Lori Vallow was arrested Thursday on a warrant issued in Madison County, Idaho. She is being held on million bail. Seven-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan haven't been seen since late September, and police in Rexburg, Idaho, have said they “strongly believe that Joshua and Tylee's lives are in danger.” Police have said Lori Vallow and her new husband Chad Daybell have lied about the children's whereabouts. An extradition hearing date hasn't been set yet.She has since been charged with two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, the Kauai Police said. She was also charged with arrests and seizures – resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime, and contempt of court – willful disobedience of court process or order, police added.“First of all, we wish to thank the public for the massive outpouring of concern regarding this case,” said Kaua‘i Chief of Police Todd G. Raybuck. “We also want to thank everyone for their patience while investigators worked diligently to comprehensively gather everything they needed in order to obtain this arrest warrant.” 1257

The list of places intended for sporting events, entertainment, and other everyday activities, that are instead being used as temporary hospitals just got longer. On Tuesday, work began to convert the indoor tennis center at the Billie Jean King U.S. Open facility into a 350-bed temporary hospital. It joins a group of nine locations in or near New York City being converted into temporary hospitals. All but one of the temporary facilities are intended to handle non-coronavirus patients. However, doctors are fast learning that there may be no such thing."That was one of the initial most surprising things for us," said Dr. Eric Wei, NYC Health + Hospitals' chief quality officer. "People who got hit by cars or were beat up," Dr. Wei continued, "had pneumonia that's consistent for COVID-19."It's why the city is now instructing its medical personnel to assume that all patients have coronavirus. The temporary facilities are part of a constellation of hospitals in the city and its suburbs where patients can be moved and treated, depending on their condition. More than 170 hospitals and temporary hospitals are part of the network, and on Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo promised that a central command center would be operational by Tuesday to coordinate them all. "It is up and running," said Deanne Criswell, the city's emergency management commissioner at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. "It's located at the Javits Center."Criswell added that, for now, the command center is only coordinating between two locations, the U.S.N.S. Comfort hospital ship, and the temporary hospital at the Jacob Javits Center. The full center is not expected to be fully operational until next week. 1705
