SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of students at nearly a dozen schools walked out of class Friday in protest of the planned layoffs by the Sweetwater Union High School District.The district says cutting the teachers is the last resort to fixing a million budget deficit. About 1,300 students use the district’s dozen learning centers.The state is auditing the district for potential money mismanagement, but the district says the shortfall is because of the decline in student enrollment and revenue.Students say they believe the district should cut the salaries of administrators instead of cutting hundreds of teachers. SUHSD's superintendent took home 7,000 in 2018.During the meeting where board members approved the cuts, Superintendent Dr. Karen Janney said they have looked at ways to save the positions.“Even in the most challenging financial times, layoffs for this governance team have been a last resort,” said Janney.Teachers and staff at risk of being laid off will receive pink slips in early March, though a final decision on the fate of their employment won't come until May. 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time, the hunting license suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest presented to buy the rifle used in the alleged attack has been made public.The dates on the license show it was invalid at the time Earnest purchased the gun from a dealer in San Diego.Earnest, 19 years old at the time of purchase, needed a valid state-issued hunting license to get around a new California law that raised the age limit to buy a firearm to 21.
