SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine released a study Friday looking into loneliness in elderly adults, and found it can be overcome in a variety of ways. The researchers noticed what appeared to be an epidemic of loneliness among adults in senior living or retirement communities, and sought to identify why. According to the study, 85% of the interviewed residents reported moderate to severe levels of loneliness.Dr. Dilip V. Jeste, senior author of the study and senior associate dean for the Center of Healthy Aging and professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said loneliness can be deadly.``Loneliness rivals smoking and obesity in its impact on shortening longevity,'' Jeste said. ``It is a growing public health concern, and it's important that we identify the underlying causes of loneliness from the seniors' own perspectives so we can help resolve it and improve the overall health, well-being and longevity of our aging population.''RELATED: Resource guide: keeping seniors protected from abuseJeste said he found few published, qualitative studies about loneliness among older adults, particularly in the independent living section of senior housing communities. He said several personal and environmental factors impacted the study subjects, all 100 of whom lived in an independent housing section of senior- living centers in San Diego.``Loneliness is subjective,'' Jeste said. ``Different people feel lonely for different reasons despite having opportunities and resources for socialization. This is not a one-size-fits-all topic.''One seemingly common factor for most older adults was loss. Losing spouses, siblings and friends can be difficult at any age, but as contacts from younger years dwindle, Jeste said he found that many residents found making new friends difficult and not as fulfilling as those with whom they grew up. Another common thread was loss of purpose.``We heard powerful comments like, 'It's kind of gray and incarcerating,'' Jeste said. ``Others expressed a sense of 'not being attached, not having very much meaning and not feeling very hopeful' or 'being lost and not having control.'''RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Taking care of aging parentsSome older adults found ways to cope effectively with loneliness, the study -- published in the Jan. 10 issue of Aging and Mental Health -- found. Performing a good act for someone else or coming to terms with aging are broad but effective techniques to cope with loneliness, the study found.``One resident told us, 'I've accepted the aging process. I'm not afraid of it. I used to climb mountains. I want to keep moving, even if I have to crawl. I have to be realistic about getting older, but I consider and accept life as a transition,''' Jeste said. ``Another resident responded, 'I may feel alone, but that doesn't mean I'm lonely. I'm proud I can live by myself.'''According to the National Center for Health Statistics, by 2029, more than 20% of the U.S. population will be over the age of 65. Jeste said the study would help develop strategies to deal with an aging population. 3150

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Convention Center will light its Sails Pavilion orange beginning at sundown tonight and Sunday in recognition of World Homeless Day, city officials said.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said millions of people around the world experience homelessness every day.``San Diego has made great strides over the past few years to invest in solutions that get people into safe, sanitary conditions and on a path to a permanent home,'' the mayor said. ``We continue to make progress during this pandemic with 600 people and counting getting housed through Operation Shelter to Home.''The convention center was turned into an emergency homeless shelter on April 1.``Our Sails Pavilion will shine orange for World Homeless Day to acknowledge the needs of people who experience homelessness and how different communities are responding,'' said Rip Rippetoe, CEO and president of the convention center.``Especially during this time when our most vulnerable San Diegans face COVID-19, we are grateful to our community for coming together and successfully implementing Operation Shelter to Home.''The first World Homeless Day was held a decade ago. 1172

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country. The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. For the biomedical science rankings, Nature Index reviewed55 journals chosen by an unaffiliated group of scientists with articles that span from 2012 to 2018.According to Nature Index Chief Editor Catherine Armitage, biomedical science can describe a variety of research topics such a genetics, microbiology and biochemistry."Biochemistry and cell biology, and genetics are the biggest fields by article count, but microbiology and biomedical engineering, reaping rewards from CRISPR and the microbiome, are the fastest rising among the top 10 fields of research,'' Armitage said.Harvard University topped both lists of healthcare institutions.Stanford University, UC San Francisco, Yale University and University of Pennsylvania rounded out the top five among university-affiliated biomedical science institutions.Worldwide, the National Institute of Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Stanford and Germany's Max Planck Society flanked Harvard."These new rankings reinforce other third-party endorsements of UC San Diego's faculty and the quality of its research,'' UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. "Our biomedical researchers continue to discover solutions to theworld's most pressing health issues.'' 1848

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters reported today it has received more than 137,000 completed ballots for the November election. The ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file, according to the agency.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego-area polling places will be open for four days instead of one, according to county Registrar Michael Vu.Vu has announced that his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters.Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely. 764

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to discuss the reorganization of the county's fire protection and emergency medical services into two separate agencies at its July 7 meeting. The reorganization would allow more flexibility for, and accountability of, dependent fire and medical services in the county's unincorporated areas, Supervisor Jim Desmond said. One of the agencies would be the Fire Protection District, which would provide fire services to the jurisdictions within the current service area. The other would be the Fire Authority, which would continue focusing on public safety radio communications. The supervisors formed the San Diego County Fire Authority in 2008 and developed a plan to cover and consolidate 1.5 million acres. The authority is currently part of County Service Area 135, which provides the government structure to organize and fund fire protection and emergency medical services in the unincorporated area.Since the creation of the authority, the board has invested more than 0 million to boost fire and emergency services capabilities. Currently, the Fire Authority contracts with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to provide services. Collectively, the services are known as County Fire.According to a staff report, County Fire has more than doubled in size in the past five years. The proposed reorganization of the agency was proposed by Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who described its evolution as like a "baby" growing into an adult. If the board agrees to separate the two functions "to better meet current and future demands," using Jacob's recommendations, it would divest County Service Area 135 of its fire protection and emergency services powers and subsequently create the San Diego County Fire Protection District, which would be a committed county function. The service area would then be left with public safety radio communication powers. 1966
