General Motors has already announced plant closings and big job cuts. Ford could be next.Ford (F) said this summer that it was planning to radically reshape its business, and could close or scale back unprofitable operations in some regions. It said it would spend up to billion on the transformation.The company has revealed little detail about its plans. Adam Jonas, the auto analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he believes Ford is preparing to slash 25,000 jobs worldwide. He expects that most of the cuts will be in Europe, where Ford has long struggled, but he said North American plants and workers won't be spared.Like GM, Ford is reinventing itself to compete in an industry undergoing radical change. But it also announced it was adding 1,000 jobs at two other nearby plants, and said that all hourly workers whose current jobs were being eliminated would be offered jobs at another Ford plant.Ford had 202,000 workers worldwide at the end of last year, with about half of those in North America and 54,000 in Europe.GM announced plans last week to close a number of plants worldwide including four in the United States and one in Canada. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says he will deputize every gun owner in his county to put down any violent protests his deputies can’t handle alone.Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels gave no indication in a three-minute video released Wednesday that any demonstrations are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.Daniels also said he would protect any peaceful protests, but added that if anyone starts “tearing up Clay County, that is not going to be acceptable.”“If we can’t handle you, I’ll exercise the power and authority as the sheriff and I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in the county and I’ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility,” said Daniels, sporting a white cowboy hat as he stood in front of 18 deputies.Daniels, who is African American, said in the video that his department has a “great relationship” with its residents, but “if you come to Clay County and think for one second we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken.”“The second you step out from up under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you and give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and glory for all that five minutes will give you.”Daniels, a Republican finishing his first term, is being challenged by six opponents in the upcoming election. For many students, the isolation can be devastating.But one Colorado school is bringing people together and preventing bullying in a unique way.A table brought students Sydney Martin and Mirsadys Wilson together.“I came over here and I just wanted to make sure she was OK,” says Martin. “And I instantly saw the quote and I looked at her piece and I was like, ‘Dang.’”The quote reads, “Be kind.”It inspired martin to sit with Wilson, who was eating alone.“She was just like being really supportive,” says Wilson. “So, I was like, ‘wow, girl’s cool.’”That's the point of the Together Table--to make inclusion and connection easy.People at the National Mall in DC added the positive messages on the table. Then, the table was gifted to Central High School in Pueblo, Colorado by the No Bully Organization.“At first, they were a little timid. They weren't sure what it is,” says assistant principal Zach Odell. “They saw these little stools and all this riding on it and they didn't quite know what to take, because they're just used to being in their comfort zone. But once they really got going with the table, it turned out pretty good.”Odell says it's helps make lunch time less isolating, especially for students who may be bullied or excluded.“This table eliminates that you can't exclude somebody from sit with you because of the way this table is shaped,” Odell says.He and students say its open design makes meeting new people less intimidating. 1576

HACKENSACK, N.J. — A New Jersey woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman who told her to wear a mask in a Staples office supplies store, according to police.The incident took place on July 29 at a Staples store in Hackensack. A woman who was using the fax/copier told Terri Thomas — who was wearing a mask over her chin — to adjust the mask, so it covered her mouth and nose.Thomas yelled at the woman and threw her to the ground, police said. It was later discovered that the victim had recently undergone liver transplant surgery.The victim suffered a fractured left tibia, which required surgery. HORTONVILLE, Wis — Benshot, a northeast Wisconsin company that produces glassware embedded with bullets, gifted handguns to staff as an early Christmas present. The company staffs 16 full-time employees and gifted the handguns as an effort to promote personal safety and team building, according to the The Post Crescent.Owner Ben Wolfram told the paper that this is the first time in their three years of business that they've gifted guns to workers.
