SYDNEY, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Children with fat fathers are more likely to be obese by age of eight or nine than those with healthy weight fathers, a new study by researchers at Australia's University of Newcastle found on Thursday.Researchers at the University of Newcastle found that children who had an overweight or obese dad were four times more likely to follow in their father's footsteps than those with a dad in the healthy weight range.They also found in the study that only having an obese or overweight mum in the family did not have the same effect.Lead researcher Emily Freeman said it was still unknown why overweight dads had such a significant effect on their children's weights.The researchers conducted their study using data collected from 3000 Australian families between 2004 and 2008 for a longitudinal study.They looked at the weights of children when they were aged four to five and then again when they turned eight and nine years old.According to Freeman, around 25 percent of Australian children are overweight or obese.She said helping fat dads lose weight could make a difference to the youngsters.
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Tuesday issued a statement to refute some security flaw claims on its LaserJet printers."Today there has been sensational and inaccurate reporting regarding a potential security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers. No customer has reported unauthorized access. Speculation regarding potential for devices to catch fire due to a firmware change is false," HP said in the statement.Tech blog "The Red Tape Chronicle" reported earlier Tuesday that researchers from Columbia University found that a feature named "remote firmware update" on HP's Internet-connected LaserJet printers could allow hackers take control of the device by installing malicious software, and even manage the printer to catch fire.In the statement, HP said that its LaserJet printers have a hardware element called "thermal breaker" that is designed to prevent a part of the device from overheating or causing a fire, noting that it cannot be overcome by a firmware change as it was reported.The Palo Alto, California-based company said that the specific vulnerability exists for some HP LaserJet printers it placed on a public Internet without a firewall. It conceded that on Apple's Mac computers and PCs running Linux system, it is possible for a specially formatted corrupt print job to trigger a firmware upgrade.The company said that it is building a firmware upgrade to mitigate the issue and suggested consumers could place printers behind a firewall and disable remote firmware upload on exposed printers.Researchers said in the earlier report that they believed the flaw is not limited to HP printers and millions of printers around the world could be vulnerable to hack attacks.

BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the country's largest power supplier, said Sunday it has put to trial operation a cross-border electricity transmission project in northeastern Heilongjiang province to supply Chinese with Russia's electric power exports.The electric power SGCC purchased from Russia began reaching Chinese customers late Saturday night after the completion of the direct-current back-to-back networking substation, or called "the trans-Amur project" by Russians, SGCC said in a statement on its website.The trial operation will last 168 hours, SGCC said in the statement.With a transmission capacity of 750 mega-watts, the electricity transmission project is China's biggest cross-border power line, according to SGCC."The implementation of the project will gain experience for the expansion of Sino-Russian energy cooperation and help promote the economic development for both countries," SGCC said.The project is also part of the Sino-Russian energy and trade cooperation.Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrei Shishkin said in June 2011 that the transmission project would increase Russia's power supply to five or six billion kilowatt hours of electricity to China and Russia intended to increase its electricity supply to China in the coming years.Russian companies plan export 60 billion kwh of electricity to China by 2020. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- An experimental drug that can remove amyloid plaques from the brains of Alzheimer's patients is being developed by Swiss Roche Holding AG in a small early-stage study, according to a report published in the Archives of Neurology on Monday.Researchers suspect the build-up of such plaques may be a cause of the memory robbing disease, although that theory has yet to be definitively proved. Gantenerumab, a biotech drug designed to bind to amyloid plaques in the brain and remove them, is being targeted at the early stages of Alzheimer's with the hope it can slow progression of the disease while patients are still able to function.The Phase I study of 16 Alzheimer's patients tested gantenerumab at two doses against a placebo over six months of treatment.The Roche drug led to a dose-dependent reduction of brain amyloid, while amyloid load increased in patients receiving a placebo, the report said.The next step will be to investigate whether removal of brain amyloid translates into clinical benefit for patients at doses of the experimental drug that are well tolerated and safe, the report said.Much larger trials and further study will be needed to fully understand how gantenerumab works and whether it can stave off Alzheimer's, said the report.Roche is approaching the disease far earlier because amyloid accumulates for 15 years before dementi.
JINAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough that could lead to more effective treatments for leprosy.A team from Shandong Provincial Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in east China has identified two new risk variants near IL23R and RAB 32 genes that are responsible for the disease, according to a report published online Monday in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.Knowing that the two gene variants influence susceptibility to leprosy could allow doctors to diagnose the disease in sufferers earlier in its outset, as well as to develop new treatments. A genetic database could now be built up to predict those people particularly susceptible to leprosy, said Zhang Furen, the leader of the research team.The study involved more than 10,000 samples being taken from leprosy sufferers and healthy test subjects and analysed.Leprosy is a chronic nerve-killing disease that leads to problems with patients' skin, feet, hands, legs and eyes. More than 200,000 newly-contracted leprosy cases are reported worldwide every year, and China has around one tenth of the world's sufferers.
