SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California Governor Gavin Newsom talked with 10News Thursday in a one-on-one interview.He addressed key topics, including his revised budget plan for 3.5 billion in the upcoming fiscal year. The governor also talked about the death penalty in light of the Poway synagogue shooting, and if cases like it make the Governor rethink his decision to place a moratorium on the death penalty. Newsom also addressed the debate over gun control, his plan to provide more funding for healthcare for undocumented immigrants and an idea to impose a tax on water. 581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol is gearing up for what they anticipate to be a busy summer of illegal border crossings. The agency showcased its tools and tactics Tuesday at a site near the former border wall prototypes. Five migrants suspected of crossing illegally were rescued by Border Patrol several miles east of where the demonstration was occurring in the Otay mountains. Border Patrol says a member of the group called 911 early Tuesday morning after they ran out of food and water. One of the people from the group had to be airlifted because of a leg injury. Customs and Border Protection says they detain 170 people a day trying to illegal cross the border in San Diego sector. CBP adds with more the secondary wall project being completed, people are crossing in more remote areas and putting themselves in more dangerous situations. “A lot of the people we’re encountering are surrendering themselves agents,” said Justin Castrejon with Border Patrol. Agents are certified through the state of California to respond in medical capacity similar to EMT’s. 1076

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a man's death after they say he died following a fight. Police were called to the 5600 block of Imperial Avenue in Valencia Park around 1:12 p.m. after receiving reports of a man having chest pains. After arriving, the 51-year-old man -- identified as San Diego resident Joseph Ives -- was taken to the hospital where he later died.Police later learned that Ives got into a fight shortly before his death. According to police, after an altercation with another man, Ives told a witness that he was experiencing chest pains. Ives "did not have any obvious signs of trauma to his body," police said. Out of caution, San Diego Police homicide detectives are investigating the death.  773

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.RELATED: Sailor hit by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp Pendleton dies“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. Matthew Mowery, commanding officer of MAG-39. “His contagious enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the Marines and Sailors of HMLA-267 and MAG-39 has been evident in the outpouring of grief at his loss and the support being shown to his family and close friends. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day.
