WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. A House panel passed a bill Wednesday to authorize additional funding for the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund until 2090, one day after comedian Jon Stewart sharply criticized members of Congress for not attending a subcommittee hearing on the issue and gave an emotional plea to extend the funding.The bill passed on a voice vote without opposition and now heads to the House floor for the full chamber to vote. The vote comes after the fund's administrator announced awards for pending and future claims would have to be cut unless Congress acted."Every sick responder and survivor should be treated with the same dignity and compassion," said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York. "All responders and survivors, whether they got sick in 2015 or will get sick in 2025 or 2035, should be properly compensated. Congress must act to make that happen."The current law was renewed in 2015 and is set to expire in 2020. A library book in Maryland is getting national attention after a little girl’s love for the book turned into its own story.Anita Vassallo, the acting director of Montgomery County Public Libraries in Maryland, loves a good story.This month, she read the children’s book The Postman for the very first time, after getting a copy of it in the mail.The person who sent the book: Mora Gregg, who checked the book out from the library back in 1946, when she was just 2 years old. Mora Gregg and her family moved to Canada before she could return it. While cleaning recently, she found the book she’s had all these years.“Probably when I was dusting the books and came across it and was rummaging a bit because it had slipped behind some other books,” Gregg recalls.After finding the neglected piece of her childhood, Gregg decided to return the book to the library 73 years later.“I’m not getting any younger and I didn’t want it to get thrown away or lost or anything to happen,” Gregg says.Gregg mailed the book back to the library with a note inside, joking how she refused to let it go because she loved it so much.The story provided a surprise ending to Vassallo, who also joked about the book’s return.“We don’t charge fines on children’s books, so no matter how old a kid’s book is when it comes back to us, there’s no charge,” Vassallo says. 1356

A man in Texas was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery after his fiancée saw a social media post of him robbing a bank the day before their wedding so he could pay for the ring and the venue.Heath Edward Bumpous allegedly approached a bank teller at Citizens State Bank in Groveton, Texas, on Friday and said that he had a gun and demanded money, the Trinity County Sheriff's Office said. The 36-year-old Crocket, Texas, man was given the money and left the scene.The Trinity County Sheriff's Office posted images of Bumpous on their Facebook page following the robbery, asking the public for help in finding the alleged robber. His fiancée saw the photos and recognized Bumpous."His fiancée ... was able to get in touch with him on the phone when she saw our post on Facebook," Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said on Facebook. "She knew it was him, she contacted him and asked him if he had robbed the bank."Bumpous' fiancée was able to convince him to turn himself in, Wallace said."He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow, so he didn't have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue, so apparently that's what the money was for," Wallace said.Bumpous gave a full confession and is currently being held at Trinity County Jail. 1327

 The Trump administration is officially banning bump-fire stocks, senior Justice Department officials told CNN Tuesday.Under a new federal rule, those who possess the devices, commonly known as bump stocks, will get 90 days to turn them in from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register, which is likely Friday, the officials said.Bump stocks gained national attention last year after a gunman in Las Vegas rigged his weapons with the devices to fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people.
