A multistate outbreak of listeria has been traced to a Houston manufacturer's Vietnamese ready-to-eat pork products, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week. Long Phung Food Products has issued a recall of its ready-to-eat pork products, which were shipped nationwide.Four people were hospitalized after eating Long Phung anchovy-marinated pork patty rolls manufactured between May 21 and November 16 and labeled with establishment number "EST. 13561." No deaths have been reported.Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food poisoning in the United States, according to the CDC, and is especially dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, over age 65 or pregnant. Symptoms usually occur within four weeks of infection but can take as long as 70 days to appear. In some cases, the first signs of infection are diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Typical symptoms that follow include headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle pain, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.Pregnant women are especially at risk. According to the CDC, they are 10 times more likely to get a listeria infection, and the odds are even higher for Hispanic pregnant women, who are 24 times more likely to get listeria.Although pregnant women typically experience only flu-like symptoms, the danger to the developing fetus is high. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth.Newborns with listeriosis can develop blood infections, meningitis and other serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.The illness has affected people in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Michigan, but the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it is concerned that families and businesses may have stored frozen products. A Nashville high school football coach has been arrested on a charge of soliciting an underage student.According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, 25-year-old Weldon Garlington messaged a 17-year-old girl on Instagram asking her for sex. His Instagram profile states he is a football coach and associate dean of students at RePublic High School, a charter school near Brick Church Pike in north Nashville.Garlington was arrested late Thursday night after he allegedly confessed to police about having sent the messages.The conversation reportedly started with private Instagram messages to her over the weekend, asking the girl when she would turn 18-years-old. He also asked if she wanted to do anything with him "like sex lol." He later offered to reimburse her gas money to drive to his apartment. The affidavit claimed, the next day, he texted her saying, "My bad about all this... Let's just act like none of this was ever talked about."Garlington was booked into jail on 0,000 bond and was charged with solicitation of a minor. A pair of children, ages 1 and 3, were shot inside of a car Thursday evening outside the University Of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, the Jackson Police Chief told the Clarion-Ledger reported. The shooting briefly prompted fears of an active shooter on the university's campus, causing a heavy police response. The Clarion-Ledger reported that one child was shot in the leg, and the other in the torso. Their conditions have not been publicly released. Following the shooting, a female driver transported the children to the hospital. The suspect was still on the loose as of Thursday evening.  655

A new study about video gamers pretty much shatters the stereotype many people have about them.Researchers at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia conducted what they say is the first study on body mass index from a worldwide sample of e-sports players. What they found surprised even them.“When we went into the study, we were kind of expecting that the gamers would have a much higher BMI than the general population, but what we found was the complete opposite. We found that players tended to have up to 21% more likelihood of being a normal weight,” said lead researcher Michael Trotter.The study included hundreds of participants from 65 countries. It showed gamers were between 9% and 21% more likely to be a healthy weight. Players also drank less and smoked less than the general population.Trotter started the university's e-sports program before he started studying for his PhD. He says he was surprised that serious players focused on their health almost as much as their playing. He says players requested a personal trainer, a dietician, and a sports psychologist.The study also found the healthier players were the better players.“We found that the players who were in the top 10% of all players and we measured up to 2.5 thousand players, it wasn't a small study. We found the top 10% of all players were exercising significantly more than their lower ranked counterparts,” said Trotter.Trotter says the growth of e-sports is huge and future programs will need to look at this study and realize they must focus on the health of players.He also says future research will need to be done on the overall health of e-sports players, such as muscle mass and bone density. 1706
