SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are just some of the conditions veterans carry with them long after serving our country.Now many are finding relief at a free acupuncture clinic offered at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM)."I had patients who would come to me and say, no you don't understand, I got off all my pain medication," said Christine Cronin, a full-time faculty member at PCOM.A Marine Corps veteran herself, Cronin started the Veterans Clinic in 2013."I focused my doctoral research on the treatment of combat stress-induced insomnia, and I had a lot of research that supported that we were going to have a lot of service members who were going to have a series of comorbid conditions, they were going to have a lot of different things that they were going to be working through. And they were all things acupuncture was good at," said Cronin. Students who've received over 2,000 hours of training help treat veterans at the clinic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans Friday unveiled a new study aimed at reducing delays on freeways throughout San Diego County.The study is being held on State Route 78 between Vista Village Drive and Interstate 15.In order to reduce stop-and-go traffic, the study will use seven electronic speed limit signs that will tell drivers the speed that will optimize their commute.“The aim of synchronizing traffic is to gradually slow traffic in advance of a bottleneck in order to keep traffic moving and avoiding stop and go traffic,” said State Route 78 Corridor Director Allan Kosup. “Essentially we are asking motorists to slow down to go faster.”Kosup equated the idea to pouring water into a funnel. Pouring it fast causes it to overflow, while pouring it more slowly gets all the water through efficiently. The signs will display advisory speeds at increments and decrements of 5 miles per hour based on traffic conditions.Drivers expressed skepticism at the program working."Even if I was to go that speed, the other people would be honking their horns behind me," said Michael Ciuzak, who said he tries to avoid the 78 on his commute to San Marcos. Caltrans noted that the speeds are not enforceable, but should help reduce delays. Though, Wilson added a shutdown was worth ensuing more border security for him and other agents. "It's about darn time Congress do something about border security. They keep punting, and we're very, very tired of it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities Tuesday identified the man killed during a Jet Ski crash over the weekend.According to the San Diego County medical examiner, 21-year-old Darius Kennedy died after a boat struck his Jet Ski.The medical examiner says he disappeared under water but emerged. People in the water helped Kennedy, who was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head and torso. He later died.The crash happened near the north end of Ski Beach around 6:30 Saturday.The driver of the boat that crashed into the Jet Ski was questioned and the boat taken in for evidence. The name of the boat driver hasn’t been released. 638
