For any Floridian who lived through the 2000 presidential election, the word “recount” may send shivers down your spine. At the time, the presidential race between Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore came down to Palm Beach County.Then-Supervisor of Elections Theresa LePore was under fire for her design of what came to be known as the “butterfly ballot,” which left many voters confused and led to overvotes and unintentional votes for the wrong candidate. The visually challenging punch card ballot design turned an estimated 2,800 would-be Al Gore voters into Pat Buchanan voters in Palm Beach County. 628
Florida is once again in the crosshairs of Tropical Storm Eta as the slow-moving system meanders its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. On Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortugas, and a tropical storm watches for parts of Florida's west coast, including the Tampa area. The storm has top sustained winds of 60 mph and has been drifting off the northwest coast of Cuba since early Monday after Eta went over the Florida Keys. The tropical storm’s outer bands have been raking the Florida peninsula for days.As it turns more toward the north, Eta is forecast to remain a tropical storm until Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Eta’s forecast cone does not bring the center of it over land until then, but its outer rain bands are expected to dump heavy rain in parts of Florida that could lead to flooding.Eta was the 12th named system to strike the US this hurricane season, setting a record. This hurricane season set a new record on Monday for most named systems with 29 after the formation of Theta in the eastern Atlantic.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. Theta is the seventh storm this season named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. The only other time the Greek alphabet has been used was in 2005.Eta previously struck Central America as a powerful Category 4 hurricane last week. The Atlantic hurricane season still has another three weeks to go, and it’s not unheard of for a system to develop in December if conditions are favorable, like they have been for much of 2020. 1602
Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg arrived at District Court in Washington, DC, Friday morning, where he is expected to deliver federal grand jury testimony as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.Nunberg is the first recognizable Trump campaign affiliate to appear at a hearing related to Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election by walking through the main entrance of the federal courthouse and heading to the grand jury area. Other witnesses have presumably testified before Mueller's grand jury since it started meeting last July, but none have made as public an appearance. 641
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Richard DeLisi is a free man after serving 31 years of a 90-year sentence for selling marijuana. The 71-year-old walked out of a Florida prison Tuesday saying he's not bitter about the lost years and prefers to focus on creating memories with his family. According to The Last Prisoner Project, DeLisi was believed to have been the longest-serving nonviolent cannabis prisoner. He was sentenced to 90 years in 1989 at the age of 40. DeLisi's older brother, Ted, was also convicted, USA Today reported.According to the Associated Press, the typical sentence was only 12 to 17 years.DeLisi told the AP that he believes he was targeted because the judge mistakenly thought he was part of organized crime because he was Italian. According to USA Today, Ted was released from prison in 2013 after successfully appealing his conspiracy conviction. While he was in prison, Richard's wife, parents, and 23-year-old son all died. On Tuesday, he met two granddaughters for the first time and ate at his favorite crab restaurant. 1053
FedEx and Happy Returns are partnering up for a new venture: making returns easier.By the end of October, FedEx will accept certain returns without a box or label, the e-commerce return technology company announced in a press release on Tuesday.“We are thrilled to grow with FedEx Office to bring in-person returns to more online shoppers,” said David Sobie, Co-Founder, and CEO of Happy Returns, in the news release. “In a time of retail uncertainty due to the coronavirus, it is incredibly valuable to add an essential services provider like FedEx Office to our growing network.”To make a return, consumers will first need to receive a QR code from either the retailers' or Happy Returns' website, then bring the item(s) and QR code with you to any of the 2,000 FedEx locations across the nation to complete the return.Customers will also be able to make returns at the FedEx stations that'll be available in 343 Walmart stores across the U.S., USA Today reported. In most cases, Happy Returns initiates refunds and exchanges immediately, the company said. 1065
