CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- With cases of coronavirus continuing to spike in the United States, Southwestern College announced Tuesday that the campus will be conducting courses online for about a week as a precautionary measure.Students and campus staff are moving all in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16 through the 20.The decision joins numerous other institutions throughout the country to help suppress the spread of the virus.List: Major universities suspending in-person classes amid coronavirus fears"This is a rapidly changing situation and we appreciate everyone’s patience as college leadership works to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, employees and community," said SWC President Kindred Murillo said. They are also canceling "large public events at all our campuses." The college has satellite campuses in Chula Vista, National City, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Coronado. "Athletic events will continue as scheduled without spectators," Murillo said.SECTION: CORONAVIRUS, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOWThe college will be off for spring break March 23-27. The campus will reopen for regular "face-to-face" instruction on March 30.The campus serves about 19,000 students across its network and offers public programs such as swimming classes, a fitness club, a child development center, and art gallery."We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in San Diego and readjust our prevention efforts as needed," Murillo said.In the last several days, dozens of major universities, including UCSD and Stanford University, have decided to cancel in-person classes as coronavirus fears spread nationwide. This is due to health officials recommending that the public avoid close social contact as they try to get a handle on the virus spreading nationally. On Monday, San Diego health officials confirmed that a female resident in her 50s tested positive for the virus after traveling overseas. No other information was given.MORE: EPA releases list of approved disinfectants to use against COVID-19 2077

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) — The man accused of threatening St Rose of Lima Church and School plead not guilty at his arraignment Friday at the Chula Vista Courthouse.During the afternoon proceedings Thomas Escajeda, 61, entered the courtroom and sat shoulders hunched, a frown carved into his face with eyes nervously panning the room.No facts in the case were shared, and bail stayed at 0,000.RELATED: Man accused of threatening South Bay church, school says it's all a misunderstandingAfter the arraignment, Escajeda's attorney Adam Hepburn spoke on his demeanor, "he's never been in custody before, this is his first time ever being arrested this is his first time ever having this type of contact with law enforcement... He is clearly upset, it's a new setting it's very difficult."Escajeda spoke exclusively with 10News from jail Thursday explaining it was all a big misunderstanding. He said he called the church office and wanted to help out with the All Saint's Day activities."If I could sell hot chocolate, and coffee maybe some donuts, I could make a killing because you know when you get up at 6:15 to go to church it's pretty cold," he said he didn't get to finish his sentence and wanted to apologize to everyone at the congregation.RELATED: Chula Vista church receives threat against All Saints Day massWhen Choir Member Silvia Sotelo heard what he told 10News she was surprised, "so hard to believe that... I think when we call an office, I mean we don't tell them I mean okay I'm going to kill everybody because I'm going to make a good chocolate, I mean that is not that way that we talk when we make a phone call."When asked if he should be punished, she replied, "It's not something I will decide," saying she wasn't the one to judge.Escajeda is facing a felony criminal threat and misdemeanor electronic communications threat charges."We take these threats very seriously I can tell you that our office and several other agencies formed essentially a committee, or a task force, and tried to develop protocols for these situations so we can get out in front," Deputy District Attorney Christopher Blaylock said.He could not say how long they've had the task force in place.Hepburn said they didn't argue the 0,000 bail Friday, "In order to combat or contradict that we like to get as many facts as possible, speak to family, friends, and do our own investigation before we make a bail pitch."Hepburn said the judge has to make a ruling on bail based on what has been presented so far in the police report, and take that as fact.If Escajeda's not guilty plea stands and he gets out, Sotelo said she'd welcome him back, "we're all sons of God it wouldn't be any different with me." 2762

CHULA VISTA, Calif. Chula Vista, CA (KGTV) - A Chula Vista City Council candidate running for District 4 says she is recovering after testing positive for COVID-19.Andrea Cardenas tells 10News she first started feeling symptoms on March 9th. She had a fever of 102, headaches, nausea and stomach pains. So, she called her doctor then went to seek medical care."When I went to Urgent Care, they asked me a few questions," she said. "They asked me if I had been in contact with someone who had tested positive and at the time I didn't know."She said because she is running for city council, she knew she was around many people on election night, but had no idea if anyone was carrying the coronavirus then."They had me do a chest x-ray where they accessed that I had pneumonia," she explained. "They said we could send you to the emergency room and have you tested but they explained the shortage of tests"She said her doctor explained that they were trying to hold the COVID-19 tests for the more vulnerable populations.Cardenas decided to just go home, self isolate, take the medication for pneumonia and hydrate."We have a social responsibility and a community responsibility to stay home," she said.Soon after, she was made aware that she had in fact been in contact with someone who contracted the coronavirus and she was tested immediately on the 16th.Her positive test results didn't come back until the 26th. "When I did test positive, I got a call from the county where they wanted to know my experience, all the symptoms that I had and where I had been," she said.Cardenas said she was fortunate to let the county officials know she had been home the entire time. She tells 10News has not left her home in 21 days and urges other who feel symptoms to immediately self-isolate and call their doctor."The moment that you feel any symptoms, just act as though you have it because it’s better to be safe than sorry," she said.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who have COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover at home without medical care. The County of San Diego urges people to call their doctor or 211 if they have symptoms. 2160
