LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Police Department has opened an internal affairs investigation into a front desk officer's response in the aftermath of rapper Nipsey Hussle's murder.The department's Office of the Inspector General confirmed Monday an investigation was underway.Grand jury testimony shows the woman who drove the alleged shooter, Eric Holder, from the scene had gone to the 77th Street station because her car was on the news. She was turned away by a desk officer who told her not to worry about it.The woman was able to speak to detectives later. LONDON (AP) — St. Bernards are known for helping to rescue distressed travelers in the mountains, but on Sunday the tables were turned in northern England. Sixteen volunteers from the Wasdale mountain rescue team took turn carrying Daisy, a 121-pound (55 kilogram) St Bernard, from England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike. The mountain rescue team spent nearly five hours rescuing Daisy, who had collapsed while descending the mountain on Friday evening. Rescue workers say she was displaying signs of pain in her rear legs and was refusing to move. They administered some pain relief, adjusted their stretcher to be more dog-friendly and packed a few treats to help settle her down. Daisy is now recovering from her ordeal.With their sense of direction and resistance to cold, St. Bernards have been saving people in the mountains since the 18th century, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. 899

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a Black man Wednesday after he allegedly tried to grab one of their guns during a struggle. According to an Orange County Sheriff's Department press release, two deputies from the Homeless Outreach Team made contact with the man outside the Hotel Miramar in San Clemente. "During the contact, a physical altercation occurred. Surveillance video at the scene showed that during the physical altercation, the subject attempted to gain control of a deputy’s gun," the department said in the news release. "Shortly after, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Deputies began lifesaving measures, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene."The latest killing of a Black person by law enforcement happened on the same day as the decision not to charge Kentucky police officers for Breonna Taylor's death was announced. Part of the incident Wednesday afternoon in San Clemente, California, was captured on video and posted to social media by the Southern Orange County Black Lives Matter group. Lori Becerra has a lot of work to do, picking up the pieces of Category 4 Hurricane Michael.Becerra helps run Southern Assisted Care, a place seniors with Alzheimer’s call home.“With their cognition, they don’t always recognize what’s going on,” explains Becerra. “So, we tried to kind of keep it from them.Since Alzheimer’s patients don’t always process information the same way, Becerra says she didn’t want to create unnecessary stress.But how do you keep a Category 4 storm howling on the other side of a boarded-up window a secret?Becerra says they kept their residents entertained.  “In the middle of everything, being scary and you know you’re hearing trees come down and hearing wind howl, you’re turning on music on the radio and doing a dance party,” she says. “You’re putting out puzzles to do a puzzle.”Becerra says it was just about keeping her residents distracted.“And they haven’t been back outside since the storm so they don’t even realize what’s happened,” she says.The facility is now without running water, and Becerra expects to be running on generators for days, if not longer. She says she’ll take the burden of the stress, so the residents, as she puts it, can stay blissfully unaware.“It’s protected them from having to go through what we’re feeling emotionally when we see it,” Becerra says. 1331
