SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro. She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Notice a lot of people around town this summer? That might be because San Diego was the second most popular California destination for Airbnb hosts.Airbnb said Monday that San Diego County hosts earned a combined 2 million in supplemental income, welcoming about 482,400 guests from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. In the City of San Diego alone, hosts earned about million and saw 345,000 guests. Once in town, the most popular neighborhoods Airbnb guests visited were Pacific Beach (first), Mission Beach (second), East Village (third), North Park (fourth), and Ocean Beach (fifth), Airbnb says.RELATED: Team 10 investigates wild, violent parties at short term vacation rentals"San Diego continues to be one of the most popular destinations for travelers to California. Throughout the summer of 2019, we have continued to see the significant, positive impact of our short-term rental community across the county,” said Laura Spanjian, Airbnb Senior Policy Director. “We look forward to continuing to work with cities across the county to ensure short-term rentals can continue to play a strong role in the San Diego economy.”So where were these visitors coming from? Many didn't travel too far from home, the rental service says. The top origin cities for local Airbnb guests this summer were Los Angeles (first), San Diego (second), Phoenix (third), San Francisco (fourth), and New York City (fifth).Airbnb breaks down the local stays across the county this summer as follows:San Diego: 345,000 guests; Hosts made a combined ,000,000Oceanside: 27,100 guests; Hosts made a combined ,000,000Encinitas: 15,200 guests; Hosts made a combined ,200,000Chula Vista: 12,000 guests; Hosts made a combined ,700,000Carlsbad: 10,600 guests; Hosts made a combined ,300,000La Mesa: 8,000 guests; Hosts made a combined ,600,000Vista: 5,800 guests; Hosts made a combined ,000,000Escondido: 5,800 guests; Hosts made a combined ,200,000Solana Beach: 4,100 guests; Hosts made a combined ,145,000El Cajon: 3,900 guests; Hosts made a combined 0,000National City: 3,700 guests; Hosts made a combined 0,000Imperial Beach: 3,700 guests; Hosts made a combined 0,000Del Mar: 3,200 guests; Hosts made a combined ,400,000San Marcos: 2,400 guests; Hosts made a combined 0,000Lemon Grove: 2,000 guests; Hosts made a combined 9,000Coronado: 1,500 guests; Hosts made a combined 2,000Poway: 1,400 guests; Hosts made a combined 0,000 2485

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking to buy a new or used car may have to hurry if they want to take advantage of the Coronavirus Pandemic's best deals and discounts.Recent studies from the California New Car Dealers Association show that sales of new cars in San Diego were down by 18.6% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same time of 2019. That's better than the state average of 21% but still worrisome for the industry.President Paul Dyke says his dealership saw sales drop in the 10-15% range at El Cajon Ford. But he says the company did a great job of offering deals to bring people into the lots, such as low-interest financing, long term payment plans, and lower prices."Zero percent is always something that gets people moving," says Dyke. "Now for the first time in Ford's history, doing it at 84 months on quite a few of the models really kept things going."The CNDCA says the Pandemic forced the industry to readjust its outlook for the year. They now predict new car sales to reach about 1.5 million in 2020, down from 2.1 million in 2019. If sales stay slow, it could be the worst year for new car sales since the Great Recession.Meanwhile, used cars are flooding the market as rental companies upgrade their fleet.Hertz recently filed for bankruptcy. The company iSeeCars.com did a study on their prices and found that Hertz was offering sales discounts in May that were 43% greater than the discounts they offered in April."There are still plenty of deals to be had," says Amada Lasik from iSeeCars.com. "That's especially true for cars that have been lingering on lots for a while, so we invite consumers to do as much research as they can."Manheim, a company that does used car auctions across the country, says used cars have been staying on lots for longer than usual. According to their data, almost 64% of used cars sold within 30 days back in February. By March, that number had dropped to 53%. The longer a car stays on the lot, the more likely a dealer will offer it at a lower price.Manheim also found that used car sales were down 34% in April compared to 2019, while wholesale used car prices dropped more than 11%.All that being said, experts believe these numbers will bounce back over the summer as restrictions ease.Dyke says his most significant concern for the industry is inventory. Since factories were closed for several months during the Pandemic, dealerships won't have as many cars to sell in July and August.Dyke says the companies will raise prices and eliminate the deals as demand increases while supply dwindles. 2574
