SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man thanked lifeguards Thursday for saving his life after he fell from the Ocean Beach pier.Adrian Castillo, 19, was drinking alcohol with his brother and friends in January when he suddenly fell backwards into the cold water.Castillo’s brother called 911 and after nine minutes, lifeguards Marc Brown and Jim Lockwood found him floating face-down in the water.Castillo was technically dead for five minutes.He spent three days in a coma and also suffered pneumonia from the cold water.“I have a scar in the back of my head,” said Castillo. “I have a couple of scars on my chest from grabbing on the poles.”Castillo is now fully recovered.“I’m very grateful,” said Castillo.  “If it wasn’t for them I probably would have been lost out in the ocean for like a month or something.”“We’re happy that you’re back and safe and alive,” Brown said to Castillo. “You have a second chance in life now.”San Diego Lifeguards, Police and city officials want everyone who heads outdoors this summer to be educated on rip current safety, drowning prevention, bonfires and know what they should not bring to our local beaches.The city has created a website to help guide locals and visitors to safety. 1230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An early morning collision involving a tractor-trailer stopped traffic near Mission Valley Saturday.The big rig crash on northbound Interstate 15 near the I-8 connector blocked all lanes, creating a complete standstill of the morning commute.Traffic was being diverted onto I-8, however, all lanes reopened just before 6 a.m. It's not clear how the collision occurred.TRAFFIC MAP: FIND A NEW ROUTEIt's not clear if anyone was seriously injured in the crash.10News is monitoring this breaking news story. 530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An ash-filled stolen trailer in Miramar contained heartbreak for more than 100 military families in the form of hand-carved model aircraft burned and damaged. Many of the coveted items are simply too far gone from the damages."They are hand-carved, hand-painted and personalized," said John Pineda, who owns Squadron Toys.He says his model aircraft are ordered by service members and veterans - and their loved ones to commemorate service. Many of them are gifts for a retirement or Christmas.Those gifts disappeared overnight, in minutes."We are heartbroken," said Pineda. He showed 10News the surveillance video.Just past 1 a.m. on Nov. 3, a U-Haul truck drives into the parking lot. Five minutes later, you can see it again, this time hauling Pineda's trailer, filled with more than a hundred model aircraft to be shipped out the next morning.The discovery of his trailer missing was followed a week later by a call from the CHP.The trailer was found on fire on a street in Vista. He towed it back Thursday.Pineda looked in the trailer and found about 60 of the models were missing. There were also burned model planes and helicopters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman says she tried to save the life of a man found dead under a bridge this morning. He was released from the hospital just hours before police found his body in Hillcrest. There was something about a man at the hospital that stood out to Megen Murray. "For whatever reason, I don't know why he caught my eye," said Murray. "I just watched the orderly wheel him outside."He was discharged from Scripps Mercy Hospital Wednesday night. He was still wearing a hospital gown when he was found."It was just unnatural to see a man in a hospital gown, in a wheelchair, sitting on the street."Murray says she tried to get the hospital to help, but she says they wouldn't listen. "Yep, he's homeless, he has nowhere to go, we dismissed him, if he wants he can come back in and be seen again but that was it," said Murray.She then took it upon herself to make him comfortable. "I said, 'I have these blankets for you,' and he looked at me and gave me the biggest smile. And then I said, 'I only have  cash on me, so here's .' I told him to put it in his pocket and said 'I'm sorry I cant do more."'The hospital told 10News the man was healthy enough to be released and aware of his surroundings. Seven hours later he was found dead after tumbling from the Washington Street bridge. And it's not the first time a patient was discharged in hospital clothes. A video from Baltimore went viral in January that showed a woman, wobbling and confused, still wearing a gown and surgical mask. Homeless patients are often discharged after being treated with nowhere to go. "We have to see these people as people. They're people. It just ripped me to the core. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at a middle school in Vista says a look inside her classroom reveals her concerns about the lack of social distancing.Laura Whitehouse’s classroom at Rancho Minerva Middle school. The history teacher has been at the school for seven years, and for the first time, she is anxious about going to school."It’s frightening. It’s frightening," said Whitehouse.She says her fears stem from the lack of social distancing. Her classes have 34 kids, with two kids sitting at each table right next to each other."Distance between each table is about two feet. They’re just on top of each other," said Whitehouse.Whitehouse says the kids are supposed to wear masks, but she sometimes has to remind them to put their masks on, and to maintain social distance."They want to clump together. They want to go to each other’s desk," said Whitehouse.After a few days of in-person learning, Whitehouse on Tuesday received plexiglass for her desk and a HEPA air purifier, but she worries it’s not close to being enough. She says there’s no cleaning between classes, as new students rotate in."The germs that are accumulating are just crazy," said Whitehouse.Amid her concerns, there have been at least four positive COVID-19 cases in the Vista Unified School District, sparking new rules about what will trigger a school to revert to distance learning.Whitehouse, who has asthma, says the new rules don’t address what’s putting her and her students most at risk."I am afraid for them. I just want them and their families to be healthy," said Whitehouse.She’s hoping for more cleaning, and more hybrid learning to reduce the number of kids in the classroom."The fear is this is just going to continue to get worse," said Whitehouse.The teachers union tells ABC 10News they are preparing an OSHA complaint detailing the classroom conditions. Superintendent of Schools Matt Doyle emailed ABC 10News the following statement:"... We have spent more than 2 million dollars on personal protective equipment for our staff and schools. These include facemasks, face shields, gloves, plexiglass barriers for teachers and students, HEPA air filters, additional outside sinks, electrostatic disinfecting machines, posters, and more. Every teacher has been given these supplies ... We will continue to work proactively with teachers and staff to make sure that they get what they need in their classrooms." 2410
