(KGTV) — One man was killed in a shooting involving a Border Patrol officer Friday near the Las Americas Premium Outlets.Just before 6 p.m., a Border Patrol agent assigned to the San Diego Sector shot an unidentified 30-year-old man in the area of Dairy Mart Rd. and Camino De La Plaza, close to the international border, according to Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent with United States Border Patrol in San Diego.Heitke said the man was illegally trying to enter the U.S. west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.During the arrest, an altercation between the man and agent began, during which the agent fired his service weapon, striking the man in the torso, according to Heitke. The details surrounding what led to the fight haven’t been released at this time.The agent received minor injuries, according to San Diego Police. That agent is not being identified at this time, police added.At about 6:25 p.m., first responders pronounced the man dead, Heitke added. The victim has been identified but his name was not released. He was described as an adult Mexican national.SDPD officers were also called to the scene. Scientists have accidentally developed a plastic-eating enzyme that may be used to combat one of the world's worst pollution problems.Researchers from Britain's University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) made the discovery while examining the structure of a natural enzyme found in a waste recycling center a few years ago in Japan.They say the enzyme, Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6, is able to "eat" polyethylene terephthalate, PET, which was patented as a plastic in the 1940s and is used in millions of tons of plastic bottles. 596

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — A Tennessee mother and her boyfriend have been accused of force-feeding batteries to a small child.A grand jury indicted the two adults – 21-year-old Kristina Thompson and 19-year-old Lucas Todd – in the case. They’re accused of forcing a child under the age of 8 to eat several AA and AAA batteries with the intention of causing serious bodily harm. The child also suffered several bruises and fractured bones. (KGTV) -- Schools in the Grossmont Union High School District reopened for in-person learning Tuesday, allowing students back on campuses for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.A large number of students began in-class instruction on Tuesday, but there were many others who chose to remain at home for distance learning.ABC 10News was at Santana High School in Santee on Tuesday morning as students with masks on trickled onto campus. Each student underwent a health screening before heading into their classrooms.Under the district’s blended learning plan, reopening campuses to a limited number of students is step 2 out of 5. Each school will only have 25 percent of students on their campuses. Each group will attend in-person learning once a week; the rest of the time they’ll be learning from home.
