FORT STEWART, Ga. – Three soldiers were killed Sunday morning when the vehicle they were riding in was involved in a training accident at the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. The three 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team soldiers were pronounced dead at the scene and three other soldiers were transported to Winn Army Community Hospital to be treated and evaluated for their injuries, according to the Georgia airfield. Hundreds have been sickened with salmonella in recent weeks due to the presence of backyard poultry, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. According to CDC statistics, 227 have been sickened since May 16 by chickens and ducks being raised in backyard flocks. Overall, 279 people have reported salmonella illnesses this year from backyard poultry. The CDC says that many of those who reported an illness got their chicks or ducklings from agricultural stores, websites, and hatcheries. Nearly one-third of those sickened are younger than age 5. Of the 279 reported cases of salmonella, 40 have caused hospitalization. The CDC added that there has not been any reported fatalities. The CDC offers the following advice to the public: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching poultry or anything in their environment. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not immediately available.Do not let backyard poultry inside the house, including in bathrooms. Be especially careful to keep them out of areas where food or drink is prepared, served, or stored, such as kitchens and outdoor patios.Set aside a pair of shoes to wear while taking care of your birds and keep those outside of your home.Children younger than 5, adults over 65, and people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness shouldn’t handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other poultry.Don’t eat or drink where poultry live or roam.Don’t kiss backyard poultry, or snuggle them and then touch your face or mouth.Stay outdoors when cleaning any equipment or materials used to raise or care for poultry, such as cages, or feed or water containers.The CDC says that salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Forgetting to keep your Christmas tree watered could have deadly consequences, according to the National Fire Protection Association. According to the NFPA, nearly 160 house fires per year are sparked by Christmas trees. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries, and million in direct property damage annually, the NFPA said. A plurality of Christmas tree fires from 2013 through 2017, roughly 44 percent, were caused by electrical distribution or lighting within the tree. Another 25 percent of Christmas tree fires were from a heat source, such as a candle, being too close to a tree. The NFPA also found that 21 percent of Christmas tree fires were intentionally set. In 2017, the National Institute of Science and Technology released a video showing the fire danger a tree not watered can pose. The video showed that a spark to a dry tree could ignite an entire tree within several seconds, engulfing an entire room seconds later. A watered tree failed to ignite in the same fashion. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree.The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.· Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.· Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.· Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.· Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Houston officers have arrested a man they say fired a gun at the car of a family of four after an apparent "road rage incident," igniting the newly-purchased fireworks inside.Bayron J. Rivera, 18, is in custody and will be charged with four counts of aggravated assault, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Sunday. Rivera surrendered to investigators, he said.The children, a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old, sustained "severe burns" Thursday night and had to be life flighted for their injuries, according to Deputy Tom Turner with the Harris County Sheriff's Office violent crimes unit.Turner told reporters Thursday at the scene that two men had "exchanged words" and pulled into a gas station parking lot.Both men got out of their vehicles and one of them took out a firearm, Turner said.The other man, who had just purchased fireworks nearby, Turner said, returned to his car and started to leave with his wife and two children.That's when the suspect fired into their car, Turner said. One of the rounds hit the fireworks inside, "causing the fireworks to explode" and "catching the vehicle on fire."The man started to drive away but stopped, according to Turner. Some "good Samaritans" stopped to help the family and took them to a nearby urgent care clinic.The children were then life flighted to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with "severe burns," the deputy said. The mother and father were also transported to a hospital.The suspect, who fled the scene, was described by the victim as a mixed-race man in his 20s, Turner said.
