Haitian officials said it was the strongest earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years.Eight Chinese peacekeeping police officers also died in the quake."We received the first sum of money donated for Haiti on Jan. 14, and since then, more and more citizens have come here for donations," said Zeng Zhiqian, of the Chengdu Charity Federation."Starting today, we prolong our working time by two hours. We will also work on weekends to receive donations," he said.In Dujiangyan City, about 200 students and teachers at the Xiang'e Primary School held a candlelight vigil Monday evening, praying for the children in Haiti.Sichuan is now recovering from the 8.0-magnitude quake on May 12, 2008, which left about 87,000 people dead or missing."The Haiti quake reminds me of the Wenchuan (in Sichuan) quake. We Sichuan people are beneficiaries of domestic and international assistance. Now it's time for us to give a hand to Haiti people," said Tan Yunjun, a staff of the Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. in Sichuan's Deyang City.The company suffered severe losses in the Wenchuan quake, with building collapses and huge casualties.The company held a donation ceremony on Monday, collecting more than 80,000 yuan from the staff in less than one hour. BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with China's central bank Wednesday called on lenders to balance their lending this year and to avoid abrupt loan fluctuations.The People's Bank of China (PBOC) will continue to optimize the lending structure and properly manage the pace of credit growth while ensuring sufficient loans for economic recovery, said Zhang Tao, head of the bank's financial survey and statistics department.The PBOC will continue its moderately loose monetary policy this year, he added.Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged the government to optimize credit structure and maintain a proper pace of credit supply to guard against financial risks.China's top banking regulator Liu Mingkang told the Asia Financial Forum held in Hong Kong Wednesday that China's overall credit growth will be scaled down to 7.5 trillion yuan (1.1 trillion U.S.dollars) in 2010, compared with last year's lending spree of 9.59 trillion yuan.To help soak up extra cash flow, the central bank raised the reserve requirements on banks by 0.5 percentage points on Monday, the first increase in 18 months, which analysts forecast would help freeze 250 billion yuan of liquidity.

JINAN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese vocational school blamed for staging cyber attacks on Google and other firms said Saturday the allegations are unfounded."Investigation in the staff found no trace the attacks originated from our school," Li Zixiang, Party chief at Lanxiang Vocational School in Shandong Province, told Xinhua.Students of Lanxiang are still in their winter vacation, Li said.He said Lanxiang has no relationship and does not cooperate with the military, adding that school authorities do not have military backing.He also dismissed the suggestion of involvement of a "specific computer science class" taught by a Ukrainian professor."There is no Ukrainian teacher in the school and we have never employed any foreign staff," Li confirmed."The report was unfounded. SHANGHAI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai General Motors (SGM) is contacting the owners of 2,065 Captive jeeps to recall the vehicles for repair due to risk of steering malfunction, the company said on Friday.The defected vehicles were manufactured by GM Daewoo Auto in the Republic of Korea between Sept. 18, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2008, said a spokesman with SGM.China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) released a bulletin on Friday, approving SGM's application for the recall.SGM had received no customer reports on the defect, the spokesman said.GAQSIQ has stopped the importation of GM Daewoo Auto's Captive jeeps, according to the bulletin.
