PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The loss of Hannah Ernst’s grandfather, Cal Schoenfeld, is still very fresh in her mind."He was one in a million," she said when describing him. "He had a heart of gold and his smile was beyond anything."It was on May 8 when the family’s patriarch lost a month-long battle with COVID-19.The loss was devastating to the Parsippany family, all happening at the height of the COVID-19 crisis in New Jersey."There was a lot of panic, a lot of pandemonium," she said.A time of mourning soon turned into a moment of inspiration for the 15-year-old, who created a digital portrait to honor her grandfather."I was just really messing on my iPad," Ernst explained. "I’ve seen something similar where you make silhouettes of people but I thought how cool would it be if someone put the yellow heart, which is the symbol of COVID, in the back of them."The creative and powerful tribute was later posted by the teen’s mom in a COVID-19 support group on Facebook which then led to others inquiring about getting their loved ones memorialized.Her “Faces of Covid” project then materialized and 325 portraits later, Ernst says she’s just getting started."I think they felt a part of something," she said, referring to what her portraits brought to families. People of color and allies are participating in Blackout Day on Tuesday to support the African American community and Black-owned businesses.Blackout Day is an economic protest organized by The Blackout Coalition. Participants are asked not to spend any money on July 7, but if they must spend, they’re asked to do so only at Black-owned businesses.The coalition says the movement is exclusively targeted at empowering and uplifting Black people, but it welcomes all people of color to stand in solidarity with them. The organization says it also welcomes allies who choose to participate in the protest, but leaders say they “make absolutely no apology for the fact this movement is FOR US & BY US.”The goal of the protest is to highlight the buying power of African Americans. In 2018, Black buying power reached .3 trillion, up from 0 billion in 1990, according to Nielsen.“This is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of economic empowerment as a reality for ALL BLACK PEOPLE,” the organization wrote on its “about” page. “United, we are an unstoppable force. We are a nation of people within this nation that at any time can demand our liberation by withholding our dollars. If we can do it for a day, we can do it for a week, a month, a quarter, a year…and one day we will look up and it will be a way of life.”The protest comes in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality following the death of multiple Black people, most notably George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. PALA MESA, CA (KGTV) -- 10News is now digging deeper in the history of violations issued to the company that operated the bus that was involved in this rainy Saturday's deadly crash on I-15 just south of Pala Mesa. “One life lost is too many,” says Chris Turner with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. We spoke to him over FaceTime on Monday. The bus was operated by Executive Lines Inc., based in El Monte. According to the federal administration that oversees bus inspections, the company's fleet has had no crashes over the past two years, until now. However, they have had 26 maintenance violations, reportedly. After a November 2019 inspection, the same bus that was involved in this weekend's crash was reportedly issued two violations related to windshield wipers and spare fuses. Turner says violations like those should’ve been fixed right away. “Those need to be remedied before the vehicle is dispatched again,” he adds.10News spoke to attorney Nathan Morris about a separate major bus crash that happened last September in Utah, injuring 22 tourists. He's representing seven of the victims. “[I’m representing] three of those who were killed in the crash and their families as well as four others who were injured to various degrees,” he adds.Morris says bus passengers can look online for a snapshot of a company's safety. “They have a right as passengers of that bus to make sure that the driver and the companies and anybody else are held accountable for keeping the rules,” he says.“You enter the company's USDOT number and it will tell you whether or not they’re a safe company,” says Turner of researching bus companies online. A USDOT number is issued by the Department of Transportation. If you can’t find it on a company’s website, Turner says you can make a phone call. He adds, “One of the things they should readily give you when asked is the USDOT number and if not, that's immediately a red flag.
