A handful of low-polling moderates hoped to break through in a crowded Democratic field during Tuesday's debate by confronting the top-tier candidates on stage, Massachusetts Sen. Mostly, though, their highlighting of ideological differences within the party offered Warren and Sanders a tune-up for higher-stakes showdowns this fall against the Democratic front-runner, former Vice President Joe Biden.Here are seven takeaways from Tuesday night, the first of the two nights of CNN's Democratic debate in Detroit:1. Warren and Sanders swat away their criticsFormer Maryland Rep. John Delaney's argument for pragmatism midway through the debate teed Warren up -- and she landed a haymaker."I don't understand why anybody goes to the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can't do and shouldn't fight for," Warren said.The crowd erupted. Before the debate ended, Delaney's Wikipedia page had been updated to say he'd died at Warren's hands in Detroit.It wasn't the only time Warren took on Delaney. Early on, she called his attacks on "Medicare for All" proposals "Republican talking points."Then there was Sanders' retort when Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan told him that "you don't know that" as he questioned the coverage Medicare for All would provide."I do know. I wrote the damn bill," Sanders shot back.The visuals were memorable, too. Sanders at one point threw his hands up at Hickenlooper. Warren rubbed her hands at the thought of implementing her 2% wealth tax on Delaney's million personal fortune.Delaney, Ryan, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock all went at Sanders and Warren from the right. Delaney began the debate by comparing the two to failed Democratic nominees George McGovern (1972), Walter Mondale (1984) and Michael Dukakis (1988).The problem facing the moderates is that their arguments largely consisted of dire warnings about the political consequences of moving too far left. They didn't offer Democratic voters an alternative vision for a post-Trump America.It's why none of them landed real blows on Warren or Sanders all night. If anything, sparring with the low-polling quartet served to sharpen Warren and Sanders for the fights against stronger opponents ahead.2. No daylight between Warren and SandersThe top two-polling progressives in the Democratic field were positioned on stage next to each other Tuesday night. But they showed no appetite for a fight with each other.Instead, Warren and Sanders largely stood together, beating back moderate critics all night.The two are courting different voters right now, but eventually, one of the them will need to consolidate progressive support to win the Democratic nomination.Still, Tuesday night showed that the time to turn against each other could be months away. Both are considered top-tier candidates who poll viably and are raising money effectively, and both appear to believe it's far too early to take such a risk.3. 'Dark psychic force'Author Marianne Williamson provided one of the night's most memorable moments when she addressed the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, with a stirring condemnation of environmental racism -- and other candidates' approach to talking about it."This is part of the dark underbelly of American society, the racism, the bigotry, and the entire conversation that we're having here tonight -- if you think any of this wonkiness is going to deal with this dark psychic force of the collectivized hatred that this President is bringing up in this country, then I'm afraid that the Democrats are going to see some very dark days," she said."We need to say it like it is," Williamson said. "It's bigger than Flint. It's all over this country. It's particularly people of color. It's particularly people who do not have the money to fight back, and if the Democrats don't start saying it, why would those people feel they're there for us? And if those people don't feel it, they won't vote for us and Donald Trump will win."The answer was a reminder of how powerful the perspective of a political outsider can be in presidential races. Williamson is a low-polling long-shot, but generated buzz with her condemnation of "wonkiness" on racism.4. Seeking a middle ground on health careThe debate began with a battle over health care dominated by Sanders and Warren defending Medicare for All against Delaney, Hickenlooper and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, who cast it as politically fraught in a general election.Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg sought middle grounds -- and their answers on health care underscored where they are trying to fit into the Democratic field.O'Rourke touted a plan called "Medicare for America." It would enroll uninsured Americans in Medicare, and allow those who are dissatisfied with their private insurance to opt into Medicare -- while retaining private insurance for those who wish to keep it."Our plan ensures everyone is enrolled in Medicare or can keep their employer-sponsored insurance," he said.Buttigieg argued for a similar approach -- and said Democrats should stop worrying about being called socialists by Republicans over the health care policies they back."If it's true that if we embrace a far-left agenda, they're going to say we're a bunch of crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda, you know what they're going to do? They're going to say we're a bunch of crazy socialists," he said. "So let's just stand up for the right policy, go out there and defend it."5. Arguments for reparationsAsked about racism, O'Rourke was the first Democrat on stage to argue for a step toward reparations."The very foundation of this country -- the wealth that we have built, the way we became the greatest country on the face of the planet -- was literally on the backs of those who were kidnapped and brought here by force," he said.O'Rourke said he backs legislation by Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee that would create a commission to study reparations.It was an effective moment for O'Rourke -- who, like Buttigieg, Williamson and Minnesota Sen. A four-day manhunt for the driver who mowed down a 9-year-old girl playing in her front yard is over.But the suspect's explanation for the hit-and-run is surprising.Gabriel Fordham turned himself in to Georgia authorities on Tuesday, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office said.Officials say he plowed his car into LaDerihanna Holmes before crashing into her home and then fleeing the scene on Friday.Dontaye Carter, a spokesman for Fordham's legal team, said Fordham was fighting off a carjacker when the crash happened."He was carjacked when stopped at a stop sign when a guy jumped in his car and pistol-whipped him, and he tried to fight him off," Carter said.At a news conference Wednesday, the DeKalb County Police Department said it couldn't confirm whether the carjacking claim was true, since the investigation is ongoing.Fordham has been charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, hit and run and serious injury by vehicle.LaDerihanna was outside playing with a friend when she caught just a glimpse of a dark car speeding toward her.Surveillance footage shows the car flying over the curb and onto the girl's front lawn in Lithonia, near Atlanta. LaDerihanna starts to sprint, but she can't outrun the careening car as it crashes into her and then into her house.She suffered a fractured skull and a shattered pelvis that's broken in three places."She was lifeless. I was screaming," LaDerihanna's mother, Charlotte Bolton, told CNN.LaDerihanna was hospitalized in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable, her mother said Tuesday.Bolton said even she felt the impact of the crash from inside the house."I heard a very bad sound, and my house shook like an earthquake," the mother said. "I immediately knew something was wrong. I screamed, 'My baby!' because I knew she was on the porch."She raced to the front lawn, where "a lady had gotten my baby from between the car and my house," Bolton said. "Another gentleman started doing CPR."LaDerihanna's father scooped her up and drove her to the hospital. And if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have anything," she said.In addition to leaving LaDerihanna critically injured, the car's impact severely damaged the home."This car is deep in my house," Bolton said. A Georgia family got a special holiday surprise last week after finding an owl hiding inside their Christmas tree.The discovery came last Thursday evening when Katie McBride Newman and her two children, India and Jack, were finishing dinner.India, 10, had started to clear the table and was in another room when Newman heard her exclaim, "Oh my gosh!""She comes very dramatically into the dining room and goes, 'Mama, that ornament scared me,'" Newman told CNN. "Then she bursts into tears."Newman said she's a big fan of owls, so the tree actually had about a dozen owl ornaments gracing its branches. At first, Newman said she thought India had just been spooked by one of those.So Newman checked it out, ready to calm her daughter's fears. But when she peered into the tree for the ornament, she saw the owl turn its head and look straight at her."And I'm like, 'Oh, that's a real owl,'" Newman said. Meanwhile, India had disappeared into the other room, in tears again.Owl may have been in their tree for over a weekThe family had purchased the tree from a store about two days after Thanksgiving, so at first they thought the owl must have flown in and taken refuge inside their tree, Newman's husband, Billy, told CNN.The family left their windows and doors open that night, hoping the bird would leave on its own -- but it didn't.The next day, they called the Chattahoochee Nature Center, a non-profit environmental center about an hour away from their home in Newnan. An employee there told them to leave the owl some raw chicken, concerned it may not have eaten in a few days.The employee stopped by Saturday morning. She caught the bird and identified it as an Eastern screech owl, common in the Georgia area, a spokesperson for the nature center, Jon Copsey, told CNN. She also checked for injuries and gave it some food and nutritional supplements.The owl was pretty thin, igniting the theory that the bird must have been inside the tree since they bought it, Billy Newman said.Returning the owl to the wildThe employee left the family some instructions: Leave the bird in a crate in a darkened room and release it after dark.At dusk on Saturday, the family left the open crate outside.
