SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Leaders from Mexico and San Diego led a conference on the effort to end human trafficking Tuesday at Liberty Station. Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, who recently took over as Mexico's Consul General in San Diego, was the first speaker, followed by San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan.An estimate by the United Nations reveals that millions of people are living in modern day slavery worldwide. In San Diego, the most common form of human trafficking is for sexual exploitation. The District Attorney's office told 10News that between 3,000 and 7,000 women are sex trafficked through the county each year, with the average age of the victim's being just 16.RELATED: Two teens arrested in San Diego for possible sex trafficking of 12-year-old girl"We have to watch the borders, but we also have to watch in the privacy of the bedrooms of our kids," Stephan said during an interview with 10News.The forum came just a few days after 18 Camp Pendleton Marines and one Navy sailor were arrested, accused of taking part in human trafficking and drug smuggling from Mexico. It's a solution for homelessness."People go into treatment, they get out, they relapse and the go back in and they get stuck in this thing we call the churn of in and out, and in and out of services."So Chris and Tammy Megison came up with a solution: Solutions for Change. The idea is to get families with children off the streets and into a program that would change their lives forever."We get them jobs right away, put them to work so they can learn the soft skills of working," Chris Megison said. "They're up at 5:30. Kids are fed and off to school. And now they're going to classes, they're going to work."Solutions for change works because of its motto, driven by accountability. It's a 1000 day program. Every client must have a job, and most work in the solutions aguaponic farm. They grow their own organic food, and what they don't eat they sell, and the proceeds go back into the program. "They're not looking to be a band-aid fix, they're looking to be a 'hand up' organization. They're not lowering the bar for people who find themselves in a pretty dark tragic place, they're trying to raise the bar and set people up for future success," San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said.And since 1999, Solutions for Change has helped 900 families escape homelessness. People like Melissa Martinez and her children who not long ago were separated without a place to call home."It's put us all back under one roof. It's actually be a lot easier than I could have ever imagined, getting everybody to and from school, to and from work, we're really united and working as a team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out.
