SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents arrested five people in connection with a human smuggling incident, including one man convicted of being a sexual predator.A vehicle traveling through a temporary immigration checkpoint in Potrero failed to stop at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, before agents stopped the vehicle several yards past the checkpoint.Agents say five males in the vehicle were questioned. Three passengers in the vehicle's backseat said they were from Mexico but had no U.S. documentation, according to CBP. The driver and front seat passenger claimed to be from the U.S.The driver and front passenger were arrested on suspicion of smuggling and the three other passengers were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally, CBP said. During a records check at a nearby station, agents learned one passenger, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was convicted in 2012 of kidnapping and rape of a minor in San Diego. He was sentenced to a seven-year prison term and removed from the U.S.“I am proud of the great work agents demonstrated in arresting this known child predator,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “Their actions help keep our communities safer.”Both U.S. citizens face human smuggling charges and the previously deported Mexican man faces federal charges.
