CLEVELAND — Ohio drivers have mixed reactions when commenting on Senate Bill 78, which is proposing a ban on smoking in vehicles when children ages six and younger are passengers. The measure sponsored by state Sen. Tina Maharath, D-Canal Winchester, calls for a 0 fine for first-time violators of the law and a fine of 0 plus 0 for each additional citation.Dr. Kristie Ross with Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland told WEWS she believes the proposed law makes a lot of sense since secondhand smoke exposure for children sets up plenty of potential health issues."When they're in a car and someone is smoking, it's a very concentrated exposure," Ross said."When you smoke there's particles that settle onto things and that can lead to exposure, and what we call thirdhand smoke."In children it impedes the way that their lungs grow and develop, the lung size when they reach adulthood."It can trigger asthma attacks in kids who are vulnerable to those, and makes kids more vulnerable to ear infections."Anna Busta said she supports the bill."I feel like the first offense fine is kind of high, with the prevalence of smoking, but I think it's great, especially for younger kids with disabilities," the Ohio driver said. But other drivers, like Sandra Buckner, believe the proposed law is too restrictive."I kind of think that we are inventing laws that take away our civil liberties and pretty soon we will live in a communist state where you are telling me what to do every second of every day," Buckner said.Ohio tried to pass a similar law in 2017.Senate Bill 78 has now been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.Several other states have already adopted vehicle smoking bans while children are in cars as passengers. 1764

Coronavirus test results were expected Friday for some passengers and crew aboard a cruise ship held off the California coast. The Grand Princess lay at anchor near San Francisco on Thursday after a traveler from a previous voyage died of the disease and at least four others became infected. While the more than 3,500 aboard the 951-foot (290-meter) vessel were ordered to stay at sea as officials scrambled to keep the virus at bay, only 45 were identified for testing, Princess Cruises said in a statement.“The ship will not come on shore until we appropriately assess the passengers,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said.A Sacramento-area man who sailed on the ship in February later succumbed 707

DENVER, Colo. – Since 1995, films like “Toy Story” have become a staple in homes around the world, but what goes into making one film is more than you could imagine. It’s not just art. Science and technology play a big role.Ka-Chun Yu is a curator for the traveling Pixar exhibit being housed at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.“I think when people hear a movie is made using a computer you push a button and something magical happens where the movie pops out on the other end,” said Yu. “But it actually takes an immense amount of work to make an animated film.”There are story boards, modeling and rigging. With rigging it allows animators to move characters’ body parts more freely and make them more realistic.Another part of the pipeline is simulation. “In ‘Brave,’ Merida’s hair took a lot of work in order to make it look realistic, having it looking springy but not so unrealistic that it did weird things when they animated it.”Lighting is also a big part. It creates mood and determines day or night. However, in the movie “Finding Nemo,” different lighting colors like yellow were used to make the fish appear to be swimming closer to the surface. Using dark blue makes it look like deep water. Then, there is rendering. In the movie “Coco,” a single frame could take up to 89 hours to render.“The reason it takes so long is partly because of all the lights involved, so you are looking at all the lights bouncing off all the characters and reaching the virtual camera,” said Yu.We learned the production of an animated film can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months, but the entire movie from start to finish can take 2 to 7 years to make. A traditional Hollywood film on average takes less than 2 years to complete. The next Pixar movie to hit theaters will be “Onward.” It’s set to be released in March 2020. Now, you will be able to appreciate how it all comes to life. 1901

Every year, a motorcycle gang rides through the serene mountains of southern Utah. However, it’s not your typical pack of motorcyclists. It’s a group of dentists from all over the world, riding to raise money.Steven Anderson is the co-founder of Smiles for Life, a charity that’s raised nearly million, thanks to motorcycle rides like this one in Utah.“All the proceeds from this ride go to fund a dental humanitarian initiative that we do in several third-world countries,” Anderson says. These fundraisers help families and children across the globe who have little to no access to dental care.“We’ve trained people from around the world to do dentistry that haven’t been to dental school, and they now have a way to earn a living for their families,” says Roy Hammond, who has been a dentist for more than 30 years.Hammond started Miles for Life almost 20 years ago. “It changed my life, my outlook, on the world that we live in and the hardships of the people and lack of access to the comforts of life we have,” Hammond says.Dentist Ron Massie came from Missouri to ride with the other dentists and their families. He says he rides to get the word out about the lack of dental care around the world.Just like the perspective they get from riding on the open road, the motorcyclists learned there is more to life than what money can buy. They all agree that happiness doesn’t come from stuff.“It’s about giving back, and that’s so true of life, Massie says. “It’s the quality of the people and the fact that everybody is willing to give more than they get.” 1576
