The Carr Fire raging in Northern California is so large and hot that it is actually creating its own localized weather system with variable strong winds, making it difficult for experts to predict which way the blaze will spread.At least seven people were still missing in Shasta County, California, as shifting winds, dry fuel and steep terrain helped the monstrous fire engulf almost 100,000 acres by Sunday night, authorities said.The fire has claimed six lives, including a firefighter and bulldozer operator working to extinguish the blaze.Sixteen people had been reported missing, but nine of those have been found safe, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, who spoke at a Sunday news conference.The fire, which started a week ago, has burned 98,724 acres and is just 20 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.Flames have destroyed at least 966 structures in the area, making it one of the top 10 most destructive wildfires in California history. The coronavirus crisis has shown how generous people can be.When the pandemic started, animal advocates from all over North America got together and launched a massive fostering campaign.“I don’t think we ever thought people would be so willing to open up their homes to homeless pets,” said Kristen Hassen-Auerbach with Human Animal Support Services, a group educating others on how to reduce animal euthanasia.The group says the campaign resulted in nearly half of shelter pets going into foster care in April and May.In some places, the wait list was longer than the pets needing placement.“If this moment has taught us anything, it’s that we're all vulnerable. On any day, it could be any one of us that’s facing losing our homes or our pets and this is the time to help each other,” said Hassen-Auerbach.The group is now helping shelters evolve. They want a majority of animals that come into shelters to be in foster homes within hours or days. That frees up money to provide food and medical support to animal owners going through tough times.“We’re finding through early research that dogs in particular are only going a couple of houses to a couple of blocks away from their house. The Florida Panthers have hired Brett Peterson as an assistant general manager, making him the first Black executive to hold that position in the NHL. The Food and Drug Administration warned pregnant women on Thursday of using some pain and fever medications during the second half of pregnancies.According to the FDA, these nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can cause rare but serious kidney problems in the unborn baby, which can cause pregnancy-related complications. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs include ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and celecoxib. The FDA added that its warning does not apply to low-dose aspirin.“It is important that women understand the benefits and risks of the medications they may take over the course of their pregnancy,” said Patrizia Cavazzoni, M.D., acting director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “To this end, the agency is using its regulatory authority to inform women and their health care providers about the risks if NSAIDs are used after around 20 weeks of pregnancy and beyond.”The FDA says that warnings on prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs already advise of complications past 30 weeks.
