SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. ICE takes very seriously the safety and well-being of those in our care and will take all necessary steps in order to ensure the continued safety of both detainees and staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For more than three hours, two women were trapped inside a downtown San Diego elevator.Fire crews were called to the Copley Symphony Hall at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after the elevator stopped as it took the women to the 34th floor.A Battalion Chief said the women felt a jolt and the elevator's lights flicker before it came to a stop.Rescuers were able to reach the women at about 11 p.m., more than three hours later. Until then, the women Facetimed a friend to stay calm, but a friend was worried they would run out of air or suffer from heat related injuries."Once I learned that they pried the doors open because it was so hot in there, what else could I do but just wait?" Kalani Creutzberg said. "It turned into a waiting game. And I'm just very very fortunate that there's a happy ending to this."Both women were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Disney officials say they do not believe Disneyland or California Adventure parks will reopen before 2021.During an earnings call on Thursday, Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said the Anaheim theme park will likely remain close through the end of the fiscal first quarter, which ends in late December."While some of our parks are open with limited capacity, we currently anticipate Disneyland resort will remain closed at least through the end of the fiscal first quarter," McCarthy said.RELATED: San Diego County businesses sue amid rollback in reopening restrictionsMcCarthy added that the company does not have any indication of how long restrictions on theme parks will last.California introduced reopening guidelines for small and large theme parks in October. Small theme parks with a capacity of less than 15,000 visitors can reopen in the state's moderate (orange) tier while large parks like Disneyland can reopen in the minimal (yellow) tier.Orange County is currently in the red tier and would need to post two weeks of orange tier data to move forward. The county would need to do the same to move into the yellow tier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every prom is memorable, but only one is truly an "Unforgettable Prom." Yet just like so many momentous occasions this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. But its legacy lives on, touching lives 20 years later."Scott was an amazing young man. Sorry. He was very charismatic," says Carmen Delgadillo.Twenty years and Carmen Delgadillo still gets choked up talking about her son Scott. At 13, Scott Delgadillo was diagnosed with leukemia. He was determined to beat cancer because he was driven to one day attend Notre Dame, he was a fighter, and was surrounded by loyal friends who would always visit him in the hospital."Scott had a lot of friends that would come to visit, and some of the other kids did not. So, he would ask his friends, 'Hey, can you stop by and see my friend?' That's how Scott was; he brought people together," adds Carmen.Those same friends planned to take Scott to the Winter Formal that year. Unfortunately, Scott's sickness got worse, and he passed away shortly after. But his legacy was just beginning."Shortly after his passing, a nurse at Rady Children's Hospital, a nurse that took care of him, stopped me and asked if we would be interested in putting together a prom for the teenagers at Rady's Hospital," says Carmen.So, Carmen and Scott's friends got together and created the Friends of Scott Foundation. Teenagers with cancer and other illnesses, many too sick to attend their own proms, get the red-carpet treatment here at the Unforgettable Prom. Everything from the limos to the boys' tuxes, to the girls' gowns, and everything in between is taken care of for them."This is a way that they just forget about everything, and it's a free night from cancer. And we're very, very proud of this event," adds Carmen.But like most proms this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. Instead, Carmen and the foundation are working to gather donations to create care packages for those teenagers suffering from illnesses and their families."We are providing gift cards, whether it be groceries or gas to help some of these families out during the pandemic," says a smiling Carmen.Now, 20 years later, Carmen Delgadillo and her volunteers have impacted and touched thousands of lives in the memory of her son Scott."I'd like to say how many lives have touched me," says Carmen. "Some of these kids are now parents. I've got to meet their children. They've gone on with their lives, some of these kids have gone on to college. So, all those lives that have been part of Scott and his legacy." 2566
