Is it safe to get together for the holidays? As Thanksgiving approaches, many people are having those discussions, and many are desperate to not only see family, but to travel.Zane Kerby, President and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors said, “People are itching to get out there.”The nonprofit organization represents 15,000 travel advisers across the U.S. They often poll consumers and recently learned that people are craving a change of scenery.“People have said, 'You know what? I want to go five, six, seven hours away,'” Kerby said. “They want to do that aspirational trip that they’ve been thinking about before the pandemic and now they really want to do it.”And they're talking about Thanksgiving and wondering whether they should drive or fly.“We asked people point blank what are you going to do for Thanksgiving?” Kerby said. “We’re encouraged, only 15% who normally travel said they weren’t sure they were going to fly this year. Kerby said that there is pent up demand for travel, and there is optimism in the industry.But, if you're talking about getting together, doctors stress that you do so safely.“All of these decisions are weighing risks and benefits and I wish I had a crystal ball,” said Dr. Beth Thielen, an assistant professor of pediatrics at The University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Thielen also is an infectious disease doctor. “I wish I could tell you what’s going to happen but I can’t, but I can tell you riskier things and safer things and appreciate that even the most precautions don’t eliminate your risk either.”“I think identifying if you or someone you’re hoping to gather with has those underlying conditions, that you maybe need to be extra cautious about preventing exposures,” she added.Of course, everyone wants to get together and realizes the importance of family.Dr. Thielen advises to limit the number of people, assess your own risk and that of those whom you're considering visiting. She recommends thinking about limiting your exposure to other people in the weeks before you travel.“All of these infections have an incubation period,” Thielen said. “You’re exposed to somebody with the infection taking root but not manifesting itself or detectable by testing for COVID. It’s a few days a week or so before that exposure happens.”We're learning a lot about COVID-19. We know outside is better. Masks are important. And we now know it affects people differently.Kerby said if you're considering flying, know that the industry is taking extreme precautions for travelers.“Between the HEPA filters they use on planes, electrostatic and defogging they're doing after every flight, the air on an airplane is probably better than the air in your home,” Kerby said.While there is a lot of discussion to be had about the holidays and travel, if you can do it safely, everyone wins. 2853

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ninety minutes after Tonya Holtgrave dropped her dog, Titan, off at Barkefellers on the west side, the doggy daycare called to tell her that Titan appeared to be injured.Holtgrave said they told her that they weren't sure what happened, but she needed to take him to a veterinary hospital immediately."I was just shocked when they called me and said he was hurt, and it's kind of been a shock ever since," she said.According to medical records, Titan fractured his tibia in both legs."They let my dog get hurt," Holtgrave said "That's negligence on their part, not mine."She said the vets told her Titan will need an expensive surgery. She wants the company to help pay for it."I just can't afford that right now, ,000 for surgery," Holtgrave said. "I am already out over ,000 just in all of these vet bills and stuff, and his medicine."Barkefellers said they checked their surveillance cameras and did not see any point where the dog might have gotten injured under their care. Holtgrave said she had Titan's vet call the facility. The manager said they can't pay for anything unless they have proof that Titan was injured on their property."The other vet had already told him it was a traumatic injury, that he didn't walk in there with two broken legs," Holtgrave said.The owners of Barkefellers said they will help pay for the medical bills once they have their own vets review the records and X-rays themselves, and get the proof they need to make sure this injury happened there. 1518

It's Hispanic Heritage Month.Sites like Yelp and Nextdoor are encouraging people to support Hispanic-owned businesses in their communities.This week, Yelp launched a tag that allows businesses to mark themselves as Latinx-owned.Nextdoor is teaming up with the group We Are All Human to provide resources to Hispanic-owned small businesses. They'll also provide free advertising during the month.The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce represents more than 4 million Hispanic-owned businesses. It says Latino business owners have been hit particularly hard during the pandemic and need support.Many have limited relationships with banks and are in neighborhoods considered “challenging” to lend to. Many were left out of the Paycheck Protection Program.“In round one, we saw many Latino-owned businesses were really largely left out of those opportunities,” said Ramiro Cavazos, President of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Half of our businesses have banking relationships. If you did not have a bank relationship, many of them were shut out.”On average, Hispanic-owned businesses only have about 27 days’ worth of capital reserved. A quarter of them have had to close, at least temporarily, since the pandemic began.“Our Latino-owned businesses provide jobs for our community,” said Cavazos. “They also pay taxes and make investments in their community. And these businesses really are the lifeblood of consumer spending."According to a study by Stanford University, Latino-owned businesses contributed 0 billion to the U.S. economy in the past decade. 1570

It took Congress almost nine months, but they have finally agreed on another stimulus pkg. The deal provides a one-time stimulus check, extends the eviction mortarium another month, and adds an additional 0 supplemental to extended unemployment benefits.In total, it’s a 0 billion plan that now protects roughly 40 million Americans from potentially being evicted from their homes and prevents 12 million Americans from losing out on unemployment benefits.“It is a success and a win because that won’t happen,” said Stephanie Freed, “Beyond that, it’s not much of a win.”Stephanie Freed is among millions of Americans who are unemployed and have already expired out of unemployment benefits. Under the new deal, she will be able to now apply for unemployment again and will be eligible for the additional 0 weekly supplemental. However, even with reinstated and slightly higher benefits, it will still be a struggle to get by.“The 0 is half of what people needed to survive, and the bigger problem is that it is not retroactive,” said Freed. “There has been five months with no additional benefit, state UI is not a livable wage.”Freed has created an online organization called ExtendPUA in order to help others who are also struggling with unemployment during the pandemic. There are members of Extend PUA that have been getting as little as a week in unemployment benefits since the 0 federal supplemental dropped off in July.Grant McDonald is the co-founder of Extend PUA and knows firsthand that state unemployment benefits alone are not enough to survive. Like many, he has had to drain his savings and take on significant debt to just keep him barely afloat.“Personally, I have not kept up with the number because I have just been trying to keep up with it all,” said McDonald. “I am just trying to pay as much as I can and watch my savings slowly disappear.”In the latest stimulus package, Congress did agree on a 0 stimulus check that some say could help with debt accumulated.“I think 0 is what rich people think poor people think is a lot of money, when in reality, that additional 0 plus the 0, one-time, is not going to help anyone pay any of the accumulated debts,” McDonald added.For Freed, McDonald, and the thousands of unemployed people who have reached out to Extend PUA, the new stimulus deal is something, but nothing close to what they’ve been waiting nearly nine months for.“We understand there are some wins here but mostly it means that we have to keep fighting,” said Freed.The Biden administration has called this latest package a “down payment” to the American people, signaling an expectation for yet another more robust stimulus deal. Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, have also mentioned a need for another stimulus deal soon.
