What you drive impacts what you breathe.With all kinds of vehicles emitting all kinds of pollutants into our air, many Americans are now suffering from related health problems.“What I feel is tightness all around my chest,” said Karen Jakpor ,M.D., MPH. “Pretend you had to breathe through a straw.”Jakpor lives in California’s Inland Empire, an area east of Los Angeles, that has some of the worst air pollution in the country.After years of breathing in pollutants, Jakpor developed asthma so severe that she lost her clinical career.“That was very devastating to me when that first happened,” she said.Jakpor has since made a career change and is now advocating with the American Lung Association with a goal of getting all internal combustion engines off the road within the next three decades.“There’s so many people who are affected and people dying and yet they don’t even know that air pollution played a role in their medical condition,” Jakpor said.In its new report titled “Road to Clean Air,” the American Lung Association encourages a nationwide shift to electric vehicles by 2050.“Transportation is driving the unhealthy air that affects half of all Americans,” said William Barrett, lead author of this report.He predicts a transition to zero emission technology, for all transportation across America, could save countless lives and billions of dollars.“In the year 2050 alone, we could generate billion worth of public health benefits and approximately 3 billion worth of climate change benefits,” Barrett said.The move to reduce the use of fossil fuels has been an ongoing issue for decades.Now, however, health experts say the need for change is becoming more urgent each day.“Hopefully this report helps move the needle,” said Meredith McCormack, M.D., MHS, associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University.She says prolonged exposure to car exhaust fumes can cause health issues ranging from heart attacks to lung cancer.To make a national changeover to electric vehicles a reality, McCormack says communities need help from leaders at local, state and federal levels.“For all of us as individuals, we also have our own ability to impact the future,” she said.A future of battery powered cars, however, does come at a cost.For example, a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid costs about ,000 more than a 2020 Toyota Corolla with a four-cylinder engine. But a study by the U.S. Department of Energy found that while plug-in vehicles could cost more upfront, they make up for it in savings with lower fuel costs and reduced emissions.That's something Jakpor believes is a small price to pay to improve America’s air quality.“We don’t want to leave the next generation with even worse disasters,” she said. 2753

When Linda Beigel Schulman heard that a geography teacher was among the victims of the Parkland shooting, she knew it was her son. And she knew she had to be with him.Schulman, her husband and her brother rushed to look for flights out of the New York area. They couldn't find an open seat with a commercial airline, so they called Talon Air, a charter jet company, to fly to Scott's side.The company's clients include Martha Stewart and Lebron James, according to their website."I had no idea what the charge was at the time. It really didn't matter what the charge was," she told CNN. "I was convinced in my mind that my son was in the hospital and I needed to get to him as fast as possible."What Schulman did not expect, however, was that she would be charged an additional ,000 for the empty plane's return to New York the next day, bumping the bill up to a total of ,459.13 dollars.Once she landed, Schulman learned her son, Scott J. Beigel, had died that February day after unlocking his classroom door to allow students to seek shelter. He was one of the 17 people who lost their lives after Nikolas Cruz opened fire in the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.The family promptly paid the whole amount with funds from Scott's life insurance policy. With Congress unable to agree on another stimulus package, the CARES Act may have been the only chance for many to get an economic impact payment or stimulus check. However, millions of people still haven’t received that check.The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates roughly 9 million people are still owed at least ,200. The Center for Taxpayer Rights estimates another 2 to 3 million people are entitled to and have been fighting to get the 0 for each of their eligible dependents.“There is a whole combination of factors for why people have not received their checks,” said Nina Olsen, the Executive Director for The Center of Taxpayer Rights.One reason some have not gotten their checks is because they did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, and they have not gone to the IRS’s “Non-Filer Portal,” which is located on the home page of the IRS’s website.So now, after 5 months, the IRS is sending letters to 9 million people in that category. The IRS has been able to identify who still qualifies for a check, but hasn’t received it, by sorting through its records and checking W-2 forms and 1099s.Those forms also have the non-filer’s address information, and that is the address the IRS is using for the new letters. The letters will inform these non-filers they are still eligible to get a stimulus check under the CARES Act and the steps they need to take to get that money. The steps are simple, either go to the IRS’s website and fill out the non-filer form or file a tax return.“It is also really important that people realize that if they use the non-filer portal they won’t be able to claim the earned income credit and many of these people may be eligible for the earned income credit,” said Olsen. “Those people need to file a regular return rather than use the non-filer portal and I don’t think the IRS has done a really good job of telling people that.”The earned income tax credit (EITC), typically earned by those who have dependent children, can be worth up to ,000. If you fill out the non-filer form in the IRS’s portal but later learn you qualified for additional money from the EITC, you could potentially lose the money from EITC.Outside of the 9 million non-filers getting a letter from the IRS, the 2 to 3 million people still eligible for 0 per dependent are getting a second chance at more CARES Act stimulus money.“Social Security Retirees and disabled people, it gave them less than 48 hours to go online if they had children. That meant they could get an additional 0 and enter that on the non-filer portal. Well a lot of these folks don’t have online access,” said Olsen. "It actually took a lawsuit that is still in the process of being settled for the IRS to reopen the portal.”Those still eligible to claim dependents have until the end of September to claim them through the IRS’s non-filer portal. That weighed on other technology stocks, including Amazon (AMZN) and Tesla (TSLA) -- down 4% -- as well as Facebook, which fell 3%. Google (GOOGL), Netflix (NFLX) and Microsoft (MSFT) were all down more than 2%.The strong dollar also weighed on stocks. The US currency surged to a 16-month high because investors fear the European economy could stall if no Brexit deal is reached this week. When it comes to free food, demand is up and donations are down.To help feed the hungry, volunteers have turned a school parking lot into a pantry.“That’s what's important,” said Maria Estrada with the Wyatt Academy, a charter school in Denver, Colorado.Once a week, her teams passes out free bags of food to families and to people like Marco Esparza.“I’m getting some apples and potatoes,” he said.For Esparza, these donations more than just feed his family.“With this kind of pandemic, it helps us to stay safe at home."Since COVID-19 hit, Estrada says more people are requesting food donations across the country while volunteers adjust to the new norm and practice new safety guidelines.“Things are different,” Estrada said about food donation centers. “We now have to make sure everybody is wearing gloves. We want to make sure everybody is being safe. Everybody has their masks on. We’re trying to keep everybody social distanced.”Estrada says the COVID-19 crisis is creating somewhat of a national food shortage crisis. That’s why they’re now partnering with the YMCA.“When COVID hit, YMCAs across the country started to support food programming,” said Katie Canfield with the YMCA.Nationwide, the YMCA has provided 37 million meals to more than one million people in the last six months. That’s an increase of more than 25% since the same time last year as they now deal with new safety regulations.“We are making sure that our community is using hand sanitizer,” Canfield said. “We are currently handling the food and then we hand them the bag when its complete.”Moving forward, the YMCA hopes to go mobile and bring food straight to people’s houses.But for now, they’ll focus on helping feed people in person. 1727
