SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The local ACLU is now firing back at ICE officials after news broke Tuesday of a new measure in place of blocking certain calls from detainees’ being housed at the Otay Mesa Detention Center.“For the government to interfere with the people's ability to make those calls and advocates abilities to receive those calls is deeply troubling,” said ACLU senior staff attorney Mitra Ebadolahi. She’s now sent a letter to both ICE and ICE’s contractor, CoreCivic, demanding answers and writing in part, "…legally, these blockages may violate the constitution."On Tuesday, Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras said his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants rights' activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance. Mensing told ABC 10 News, “Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people.”The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.“Without more information, it does appear that his kind of blockage is either retaliatory or at least viewpoint discriminatory,” added Ebadolahi.The ACLU is demanding that ICE remove the blockage and offer a response by next Tuesday.CoreCivic referred ABC10 News to ICE which sent a statement Wednesday reiterating part of a statement from Tuesday which reported that it temporarily blocked detainee calls to a specific San Diego area phone number after calls resulted in disruptive behavior from detainees. The full statement from Wednesday is below.“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center (OMDC) to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility.""ICE fully respects the rights of those in our custody to peacefully express their opinion without interference. This action was taken out of concern for the safety of those in our custody. ICE takes very seriously the safety and well-being of those in our care and will take all necessary steps in order to ensure the continued safety of both detainees and staff. San Diego ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) management will continue to monitor the situation. Temporary blocked phone calls may be restored when deemed safe to do so.""All ICE facilities provide detainees with reasonable and equitable access to telephones. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open.  The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13.  It's been a controversial project from the beginning. The storage facility will hold 500 units for homeless people to store their things while they look for work and get back on their feet.  RELATED:  514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teenage cancer survivors from Rady Chidlren's Hospital celebrated an "unforgettable" event.The annual Unforgettable Prom brought teens battling cancer out for a night of dancing and celebration — a night many of the teens miss at school while they continue to fight illness. Now in its 13th year, the dance has helped teens take a moment to celebrate that special night in every teenager's life. And everything is covered: From dresses and tuxedos to entertainment, food, and decor, thanks to volunteers and the Friends of Scott Foundation, a local non-profit that works to provide emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their families.This year's theme, Avengers "Age of Heroes," honors Ryan Wilcox, a former patient and Unforgettable Prom King, who lost hist battle with cancer. "Unforgettable Prom" was started by Carmen Delgadillo, founder of the Friends of Scott Foundation. Degadillo lost her teenage son, Scott, to Acute Lymphostic Leukemia. From that loss, Delgadillo started the foundation to help other families in need of support during their own battles with cancer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The beloved founder of the popular Roberto's Taco Shop chain which began in San Diego died last week, according to the company.Dolores Robledo, 90, died on July 14, the company said in a release. Robledo opened the first Roberto's Taco Shop — and San Diego's first taco shop — with her husband, Roberto, in 1964, according to the company. Prior to that, the couple started their food career providing tortillas to stores and restaurants from their San Ysidro tortilla factory."Since then, Sra. Dolores had been sharing her love for family and authenticity through each meal served," the company said in a release. "She has left the legacy of her love and perseverance. The way she touched lives will remain ongoing. Dolores Robledo will be deeply missed. Please keep her family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time."Robledo was the mother to 13 children and had 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In 1990, Roberto moved to Las Vegas and soon after decided to open his first taco shop in Las Vegas. With the help of her family, Roberto's expanded to 60 locations across California and Nevada.The Roberto's chain is believed to have started the variety of other eateries with the "berto's" suffix in San Diego. It's long-rumored that the famed California Burrito was created at one of these "berto's" shops, but which shop can claim that title continues to be debated.On Instagram, the company continued: "Sra. Dolores Robledo, founder of Roberto's Taco Shop, loved cooking good Mexican food for her family and friends. She and her family expressed that passion by opening their first Roberto's Taco Shop in San Diego in 1964. She will be missed but her legacy of cooking fine Mexican dishes will continue for generations to come."Visitation services for Robledo will be held at 4 p.m. on July 29 at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita.
