SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California appeals court has denied the latest parole bid by Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten.Two of the three appellate judges on Friday upheld former Gov. Jerry Brown's decision to block her parole last year. She is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and others kill Los Angeles grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969.Current Gov. Gavin Newsom again denied her parole in June, saying she is still a threat at age 70.The appellate judges said that Brown's reasoning for denying Van Houten's parole is supported by some evidence. RICHMOND, Va. – A military veteran who died of a heart attack while onboard a Richmond city bus was robbed while unconscious. Several burobbed while unconsciouss riders jumped in to help the man while he went into cardiac arrest, but they ultimately got off the bus, with the exception of one.Police say 20-year-old Demontea Chappell stayed behind under the guise of giving aid but was seen on camera taking the man's wallet.A video reveals the heartbreaking details."Pop? What you name is Pop?" said a young man, as the older bus passenger struggled unconsciously and not breathing."Trying to find his wallet. Where the wallet at?" that young man continues.Chappell, according to police, was acting as if he was giving aid to the Air Force veteran, but the bus video showed he went inside the man’s wallet and then slid the cash into his own pocket.Sources told WTVR's Jon Burkett that the veteran always carried cash, but how much money he had that day was unknown.Police now have a warrant for Chappell's arrest.The veteran died on the bus near the corner of First and Federal last Thursday morning.Sources tell WTVR that after family members questioned why their loved one’s wallet was empty, officials with the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) went to the recordings and alerted police. (AP) — A pilot ejected moments before an F-16 fighter jet crashed Thursday into a warehouse just outside March Air Reserve Base in California, military officials said.The pilot was not hurt, and there were no immediate reports of injuries on the ground, said Maj. Perry Covington, director of public affairs at the base. The cause of the crash was under investigation.Interstate 215, which runs between the base and the warehouse, was closed in both directions, backing up rush-hour traffic for miles.Television news showed a large hole in the roof and sprinklers on inside the building about 65 miles east of Los Angeles.Cellphone photos and video from inside showed what appeared to be the tail of the plane buried in twisted metal and piles of cardboard boxes.Daniel Gallegos, a warehouse worker, said he's used to hearing the sound of planes coming and going, but the noise just before the crash was deafening."Next thing I know I just hear this explosion and turn around to the back of the building, and I just seen a burst of flames and just the ceiling started falling through every part of the building," he told KABC-TV . "I turned around, and my co-worker just told me to get, so I just made a run for it."Gallegos said he believed one of his co-workers was struck by something — possibly a falling fire sprinkler — but wasn't seriously hurt.The crash happened as the pilot was landing following a routine training mission, March Air Reserve Base Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Holliday said."The pilot was having hydraulic problems," Holliday said. "He started losing control of the aircraft."The jet's cockpit canopy was on a runway, and a parachute had settled in a nearby field.Damage to the warehouse was relatively minor, and there was no major fire, which Holliday called "a miracle."The pilot, the only person on board, was taken to a hospital for examination, officials said.The F-16, assigned to the Air National Guard, was carrying standard armaments, Holliday said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Californians will vote next year whether the state should issue billion in bonds for school construction and modernization projects.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday placing the bond on the March 2020 ballot. He says improving physical conditions in schools will improve students' educational experiences.Nine billion dollars will go to facilities serving students in pre-school through 12th grade. Two billion dollars each will go to the University of California system, the California State University system and community colleges.Local governments have to provide matching funds. But the state will provide a greater share of the money for districts with high percentages of low income, foster care and English learning students.Newsom says he's confident voters will approve the bonds. 838
