EL CAJON (KGTV) -- In response to growing concerns of the rapidly spreading coronavirus, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District officials have announced that they will be canceling in-person classes for a week as a precautionary measure.Grossmont and Cuyamaca college campuses will close the week of March 16-20 and temporarily shift to online instruction as a precautionary measure.“We are taking these extraordinary measures out of an abundance of caution,” said Chancellor Lynn Neault. “We are doing everything we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our students, employees and the public, while ensuring that our student can complete their classes.”The colleges join numerous local and national institutions that are also announcing face-to-face instruction to quell the spread of coronavirus, including Chula Vista's Southwestern College, San Diego State University, and USD.Non-instructional employees will be on site during their regular work hours, according to officials."All student events for the next two weeks are canceled, and intercollegiate athletics games are cancelled through March 29. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A metal recycling facility in El Cajon burst into flames Wednesday afternoon, sending thick, black smoke into the air.The fire erupted at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Bradley Avenue near In-N-Out Burger.In total, 20 firefighters from Santee Heartland and San Miguel responded to the blaze. Firefighters said they had to use breathing tanks because they didn't want to come into contact with the heavy smoke.The official cause of the fire hasn’t been confirmed, but crews received reports that the fire started in the car crusher then spread to nearby recycled materials. "Oh it stinks really bad. I took hazmat training. Any time they are burning stuff like that stay upwind and don't smell that stuff,” said Larry Sutton, a worker in the area.Crews used an aerial water stream to send 1,000 gallons of water per minute onto the large fire. "We had one in July, fire prevention bureau working with the business to make ensure materials are stored properly and measures are safe,” said Justin Fuller with the San Miguel Fire Department.Crews also consulted with a hazmat team due to the nature of the fire. Officials said they are working to try and control runoff from the fire which may contain hydraulic fluid from the car-crushing device. 1287

EL CAJON (KGTV) — Some amateur detective work by an East County business owner helped deputies track down two men suspected of stealing a popular wrought iron horse statue.Deputies arrested 56-year-old Percy Hill in Arizona and 62-year-old Rick Freeman near Lakeside on Friday.The men are accused of stealing the 10-foot-tall horse statue from outside the Double S Tack and Feed Store in unincorporated El Cajon on October 2. The statue weighs about 250 pounds, said owner Rita Gallant, somewhat lighter than initial estimates.After the theft, Gallant gathered surveillance video from nearby businesses and solicited tips on social media from the East County community.The video showed two vehicles were involved in the heist, including a distinctive Suzuki Samurai with a yellow flag mounted on a window, Gallant said. But the big break came on October 22, she said. Employees sounded the alarm when two men pulled up in the same Suzuki Samurai with the yellow flag. The men asked about purchasing yard art. Gallant thinks they were actually scoping out more things to steal."Not very smart," she said.After the store posted pictures and videos of the second encounter, a tipster was able to identify one of the men and deputies made arrests in two states."I never dreamed at all that I would ever get the horse back. I just wanted to make sure the people that stole him paid for it," she said.Gallant said she spoke with investigators who interviewed the suspects. "The gentleman took it for his yard," Gallant said. "He was doing a western theme."She drove the roughly 250-pound statue home from Arizona Monday night in a horse trailer.
