OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Outside the Star Theatre in Oceanside is a recently completed mural designed exclusively for the space and ushering in a wave of public art. "We want to create a place where people can feel welcome," said Gumaro Escarcega with Main Street Oceanside, the group that started the project called "Art that Excites."Their goal is to fund 10 new murals at places all over downtown Oceanside. OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states.  Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident.The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus. One person has died and 16 others have become ill from a salmonella outbreak linked to kosher chicken, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.Eight people have been hospitalized, including the person who died.Illnesses were reported in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The death was reported in New York.According to the CDC, the agency began an outbreak investigation in June after several cases were reported in New York among people who said they had consumed kosher chicken."In interviews, ill people reported eating kosher chicken, and when asked about the specific brand eaten, several people reported Empire Kosher brand. The outbreak strain was also identified in samples of raw chicken collected from two facilities, including one facility that processes Empire Kosher brand chicken," the CDC said in its announcement.However, the agency is not telling consumers to avoid eating kosher chicken or Empire brand chicken. Rather, they should follow safe food preparation practices including washing hands before and after touching raw chicken and washing utensils, cutting boards and counters where raw chicken was prepared.Consumers should also cook chicken thoroughly, making sure the inside temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature recommended to kill germs that cause illness such as salmonella.Salmonella illness usually begins between 12 and 72 hours after consuming the bacteria. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and can last four to seven days.The earliest illness linked to this outbreak began September 25, and the most recent case began June 4.Severe illness may require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics. Those most at risk for severe illness and complications are children younger than 5 and adults over 65, as well as people with compromised immune systems.The youngest patient in this outbreak is younger than 1 year old, and the oldest is 76.The US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert "out of an abundance of caution," the agency said."FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to properly handle, prepare, and cook these raw chicken products."The CDC and the USDA are working with state health officials on the investigation.Kosher food is prepared under supervision to ensure that the dietary laws followed by observant Jews are adhered to. OTAY MESA (CNS) - A fisherman reported seeing what appeared to be a body in Upper Otay Lake this afternoon.The sighting at the reservoir east of Chula Vista was reported shortly after 2 p.m., according to police.Patrol officers investigated and, unable to confirm or discount the report, called in city lifeguards.By the time the dive team got to the lake, however, it was getting too late for an effective underwater search, said Jose Ysea, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The divers planned to return for a thorough search on Wednesday, Ysea said. 578
