SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Coast Academy, a private school in Carmel Valley, has an "ambitious" plan to bring kids back to campus as soon as San Diego gets approval from state and county administrators."When we put our mind to something, we make it happen," says Jan Dunning, the school's founder and principal.Dunning plans to build six large tents on the school's property, similar to tents used at weddings or other large events. They'll have flooring, electricity and other amenities to make them feel like indoor classrooms."At my school we think on our feet," says Dunning. "We are flexible because we work with students that need flexibility. So that's a real strength of ours."Cal Coast Academy caters to students who need non-traditional learning, like elite athletes who travel extensively, international students, or students with learning disabilities. That's why the school feels they'll be able to make a non-traditional learning environment work this fall.Class sizes in the tents will be limited to six students per teacher, to allow for social distancing.But the project isn't cheap. Dunning says they've already spent nearly ,000 on the tents. Costs like that make it unlikely that public schools with large enrollments would be able to hold classes outdoors in a similar fashion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a way to celebrate military members and their families this weekend, San Diego County Animal Services will waive adoption fees.From May 24 to 26, the department will take part in the Animals for Armed Forces adoption event to offer the free adoptions for cats, dogs, and rabbits. Active duty, reserve, and veterans from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard and their immediate family are eligible for the promotion.RELATED: Memorial Day ceremonies and events in San DiegoCounty Animal Services’ Carlsbad and Bonita locations will also include free vaccinations, spay or neuter, a microchip, licensing, and a veterinary exam with adoptions.“This is the County’s way of saying thank you for all the sacrifices the military and their families make to keep us safe,” County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa said. “And sometimes these adoptions have the effect of the two rescuing each other.”Those interested in adopting a pet must show photo identification and at least one of the following forms of ID: A military ID, Dependent ID, DD-214 and driver’s license or NGB Form 22.The adoption event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day of the event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As Santa Ana winds move out of the region, a freeze warning was issued for portions of San Diego County.The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for the county's valleys and deserts from midnight through 10 a.m. Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders are reacting to this week's move by state lawmakers to let voters decide in November whether to reinstate affirmative action.“It’s been a long, hard road and now we can actually see some light at the end of the tunnel,” said San Diego NAACP President Francine Maxwell on Thursday afternoon. It follows Wednesday's news that California lawmakers approved a proposal to repeal the 25-year-old law that bans looking at race, sex, ethnicity, color or national origin in college admissions, contracting and public employment.“The NAACP San Diego branch is elated that it was a 30-10 vote. Two-thirds majority said that things have to change and we're headed to November,” she added.Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) authored the bill and asked for support on ACA 5, which lets voters decide whether to reinstate affirmative action by repealing Prop 209.“The ongoing pandemic as well as recent tragedies of police violence is forcing Californians to acknowledge the deep-seated inequality and far-reaching institutional failures that show that race and gender still matters,” she told her colleagues this week.“African Americans have been at the bottom for over 401 years. Affirmative action was an opportunity so they could open the door to walk into colleges, to [have] the opportunity of economics, to change the narrative of their family,” Maxwell told ABC10 News.Republican Assembly candidate June Cutter from San Diego opposes the return of affirmative action. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As President Donald Trump threatens to shutdown the U.S.-Mexico Border, San Diego leaders are in Mexico City to strengthen economic ties and talk binational business.Five mayors and nearly 100 elected officials, business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California left for Mexico Sunday for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Binational Delegation to Mexico City.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the top two issues up for discussion are the continuing Mexican sewage runoff problems that impact our beaches and the free trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.Monday, Mexican officials said 70 percent of trade with the U.S. is by trucks, and the Mexican Government is ready to collaborate with the U.S. to ensure border safety and that trade flows efficiently.“Free trade is incredibly important to our region here in San Diego,” said Faulconer. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border. He is also calling for the approval of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.The Chamber also said advancing USMCA is a key priority of this week's meeting.Monday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico trade relationship, including the border, immigration and economic development. On Tuesday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico water policy.Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina has been pushing for the Mexican government to rebuild basic sewage infrastructure. The sewage runoff from the Tijuana River Valley flows into some of our local beaches, shutting them down for days and sometimes even months.Dedina said he hopes to come back to San Diego with new solutions to resolve the ongoing, decades-old issue.“Will be really pressing really hard with high-level officials to really move this forward so we can continue to have clean beaches,” he said Sunday.The leaders will wrap up their trip to Mexico on Wednesday. 2016
