(KGTV) - The warmest ocean temperatures on record are making things interesting for San Diego’s fishermen.Local fisherman say they are seeing more game fish closer to the coast than even before.“2018 is a season that has been off the charts,” said Frank Ursitti, the owner of H & M Landing.Scientists recorded ocean temperatures at more than 80 degrees last week.Ursitti says his tours are lining in more dorado, yellowtail, yellowfin and bluefin this time of year than usual.  “Often time times anglers or recreational fisherman will have to venture 8 to 15 days at seas for certain kinds of fish,” said Ursitti, “but now some of anglers are venturing just 12 hours offshore for the fish of a lifetime.”Fisherman Magnum Scuro says they have all noticed the warmer waters, but he is curious for what may be it consequences next year.“There are some negative things that can happen with the warm water - it can kill the kelp,” said Scuro, “ (the) hot water is going to expose a lot of areas where there hasn’t been kelp so we can get to it, but there’s going to be be a lot of kelp that’s going to be gone.” 1151

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Firefighters in California are racing to slow the spread of wildfires that burned nearly one million acres in a week and destroyed hundreds of homes. The fires have killed five people, torched nearly 700 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands from their houses. Light winds, cooler nighttime weather helped fire crews make a bit of progress on Saturday. But their efforts could be hurt by warm, dry weather, erratic wind gusts and lightning in the forecast. Firefighters are beginning to get help from other states and President Trump issued a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance. In a time like this, there are important tricks to remember to help sort fact from fiction. Lynn Walsh is the Ethics Chair for the Society of Professional Journalists and said social media can be a good place to get information, as long as you know how it works and some red flags to keep an eye on. “Remember that the content that you’re seeing is all based on an algorithm and that algorithm is based on content that you are normally engaging with and the people that you are connected with and engaging with,” she said. She said social media will tailor what you see to who and what you interact with, so a good tool can be getting off apps and going straight to the source. She said to try googling stories to see diverse coverage of the subject and other related stories. She said a tool to tell if an informational post is true is to see if there is a link to more information. If someone just posts a picture or screenshot with facts or information, ask for more. “Hey do you have a link that adds or provides more information? Because the county is not going to post this jpeg image online. There’s going to be a link on a website, it’s going to link back where there’s more information,” she said. She also reminds that social media companies can filter content. She said they each have different policies on how and what they filter. “People say ‘oh it’s my First Amendment right to publish anything I want on these platforms.’ Remember the First Amendment applies to the government censorship of your opinion. It does not apply to businesses, if a business wants to decide to take something down, they can, that is their private platform,” she said. While news outlets and social media platforms are responsible for being accurate, she also pointed out that in an era of sharing posts, people also need to hold themselves accountable.“The third group that has responsibility in misinformation and things spreading, it’s the public. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology.The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China.So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year. The faster networks will enable consumers with 5G devices to download movies in a matter of seconds and access other streaming services more quickly.Apple isn't expected to release an iPhone that works on 5G networks until September 2020, putting it behind rivals such as Huawei and Samsung, which already make handsets that work with the faster wireless technology.The sale is a residue of Intel's inability to catch up with Qualcomm in the business of making chips for smartphone modems. Intel spent the past decade trying to make inroads in that market, with its big move coming in 2011 when it bought Infineon Technologies' smartphone modem division for .4 billion.Apple rarely spends a lot on acquisitions, preferring to snap up startups for relatively small sums. (KGTV)- Video of a disturbing racist rant was captured in downtown San Diego Tuesday, and the man who experienced the verbal attack is sharing his story.Rodney Jackson was working as a security guard outside of the Pinnacle on the Park apartment complex in the East Village when an unidentified woman began hurling racial slurs at him.“I was trying my best to diffuse the situation, and she just continued to antagonize,” said Jackson. “It kind of caught me off guard because I’ve never dealt with anything like that before.”RELATED: Mother responds to video showing woman hurling racial slurs at son (VIDEO)In the video he recorded, the woman repeatedly attacks Jackson with racial slurs, even after he asks her to stop.“I started recording just to save myself because of everything going on,” he said.The unprovoked verbal attack happened in the early morning hours on Tuesday.Jackson said the woman was kicked out of a party at the high rise.“She went outside and started arguing with some people walking back, I asked her to come in the building, and I’ll call her a cab,” he said.He said she appeared to be intoxicated and suddenly directed her anger at him.“I told her again, ‘I called you a cab, but I don’t agree with the way you’re calling me all these different names’ and she just continues.”The video shows the woman calling Jackson the N-word repeatedly during the confrontation.“If you’re going to act like a n-----, then I’m going to call you n-----,” the unidentified woman shouts at Jackson. “I don’t [expletive] care!”Jackson remains calm and composed as the woman continues to harass him.“My mother and my grandmother, they raised me never to let anyone get me too upset to where it gets me out of character or changes the person that I am,” he said. “They raised me to be a strong black man.”Jackson said he grew up in National City in a multi-cultural neighborhood, and this was his first time experiencing something like this.“I’ve never looked at people by their color,” he said. “I played semi-pro football for a San Diego team, and we had people from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds, and we’re all just a family.”Jackson’s brother and mother shared the video on social media to highlight the issue of racism.He said he hopes the painful video will serve as a reminder that racism does still exists, even in that community.“Be open-minded and accept people for who they are. The stronger everyone comes together, the better the world will be,” he said.He wants anyone who has experienced racism to remember this: “Stand strong for yourself and don’t ever let anyone belittle you or make you feel like less of a person.” 2669
