Infectious disease experts say the threat of superbugs is growing. They're bacteria that have evolved so that existing medications no longer work to treat infections.“This is made worse by the overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics and it has become a crisis here in the United States and around the world,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Chief of Infectious Disease at Tufts Medical Center.Boucher says antibiotic-resistant bacteria can affect treatment for patients with skin infections or cause urinary tract infections in otherwise healthy women.Superbugs are also well-known for their presence in hospitals, causing serious problems, like pneumonia. That's a big issue amid the pandemic, because hospitalized COVID-19 patients may face getting a secondary infection, putting them at a greater risk of dying.Boucher says the emerging threat of superbugs has gotten to the point where physicians have had to tell some patients their infection can't be treated because there's no effective antibiotic. That could mean a denial for an organ transplant or chemotherapy.“And that is nothing that any of us in the infectious disease business ever, ever want to face,” said Boucher. “And we know that if don't continue to advocate and act and really change this problem, that could get worse.”Boucher is working with the Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease to advocate for change in Congress. She says people should make sure to take any prescribed antibiotics appropriately and talk to their doctor about how much is truly necessary. 1540

It's one thing to imagine what life might be like, but it's a totally different thing to see it right before your eyes."If things had turned out differently," the actor in the ad says. "I don't know. Maybe I'd be married to that girl I was hanging out with freshman year. Life keeps racing forward for everyone except me.The actor in this new ad is what Caleb Sorohan would have looked like, if he hadn't been killed eight years ago.His mother, Mandi Sorohan said, "It's almost like Caleb came back to tell people, look this is what I should be doing. But I can't because I was texting and driving."Sorohan and her family worked with forensic artists and visual effects teams to recreate what her son would look like today. All for a chilling yet powerful ad by AT&T showing the future distracted driving can take away."You don't think of all the things that could have happened," Sorohan says. "Never got to happen. So to me I think that's the biggest part of this ad."Caleb had just finished his first semester of college when he read a text message while driving, veered into oncoming traffic, and hit an SUV head on. He died instantly."It happened and he made a terrible mistake," Sorohan says. "And we're just trying to make sure that other people don't make that same mistake because not only could you kill somebody else you could kill yourself."The ad is a part of AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign, which has inspired nearly 25 million pledges to not drive distracted. Sorohan hopes this will add to that number, and show people this isn't just a teen issue, but an issue for everyone."We'll never get to talk to Caleb again," Caleb's brother Griffin shares in a longer version of the ad. "We'll never get to do regular day things with Caleb again."Caleb's sister also took part; the family is hoping that by doing so, people can see the lives impacted by distracted driving go far beyond their own."They should want to come home to the people that they love," Sorohan says. "Every night and they should know how important they are to the people who love them. So don't pick up your phone in the car, just put it down and forget about it until you get to where you're going. Nothing at all that you can do on your phone is worth not coming home to those people."A message from a future that could have been. That no distraction is worth losing one.To learn more about the "It Can Wait" campaign and take the pledge, click here. 2453

It’s easy to overeat during the holidays with all the delicious offerings. The average holiday meal has about 3,000 calories, according to the Calorie Control Council. That doesn’t even include alcohol you may consume!"People kind of let themselves go, because they think it's okay,” says physical trainer Brian Brenzels. “Because they have an excuse to not workout and eat everything."  However, don’t stress too much. The average person only gains two pounds during the holidays, according to a study published in Psychology and Behavior.  But if that two pounds scare you, how can you avoid it?When tomorrow comes, and you're faced with an abundance of food, Brenzels says to grab the smallest plate.   “If you grab the bigger plate, you tend to fill it up completely,” he says. “You grab the smaller plate, you fill it up, that's still a quarter of the portions you would eat."  When it comes to leftovers, give it away.   "A lot of people are eating all the leftovers,” Brenzels says. “Send the leftovers home with people in small increments. Set yourself up for success."  And once Friday morning rolls around, make sure you get back at it.   "Still wake up, even if it's a walk, get up,” the trainer recommends. “Get moving, get that metabolism going. Get that workout in in the morning, and then its right back to normal."  Whatever you do, Brenzel says, don't wait till the New Year to make your resolution to get fit.  "Make your resolution right now,” he says. “Friday. Friday morning, you wake back up and you get back to it."    1619

Investigators are trying to determine whether an explosion early Tuesday at a FedEx facility outside San Antonio is connected to four explosions that have rattled the Austin, Texas, area this month. The most recent blast happened inside a FedEx facility in Schertz, Texas, FBI San Antonio spokeswoman Michelle Lee said. Schertz is a San Antonio suburb that is roughly an hour's drive southwest of Austin. One FedEx team member suffered minor injuries when a "single package exploded" at the ground sorting facility, company spokesman Jim McCluskey said Tuesday in a statement. An ATF spokeswoman earlier had said no injuries were reported."We are not providing any additional specific information about this package at this time," McCluskey said.Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, Lee said there could be a connection with the four Austin explosions, which killed two people and injured four others over 17 days starting March 2. 956

INDIANAPOLIS – A veteran and retired postal worker missed his funeral after his remains were lost in the mail delivery process. The ashes of Richard Nelson, who once served in the Navy, remain missing.Years after leaving the military, Nelson headed for Arizona and left specific instructions to his family on how he wanted services handled following his death. In July, the funeral home in Arizona mailed Nelson’s remains on August 1, and the tracking number stated it was to arrive in Indianapolis on August 2.Nelson’s nephew, Scott Hare, had plans to drive the ashes to Michigan for services – but he never received the package. The memorial service went on as scheduled and the cemetery plot next to his parents had to be refilled until further notice."I have to keep telling people I don't know anything, there's no closure,” said Hare.Hare said his moments of sorrow were overcome with pride.“At some point, I had to laugh,” said Hare. “He retired from the post office and was lost at the post office. I'm sure he's laughing somewhere.”The post office released a statement: 1083
