SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds gathered in Balboa Park to pray for the 50 people killed in the New Zealand terrorist attack and spread the message that hate has no home here.About a dozen speakers shared stories of the victims or hate directed at minorities."It will take all of us to put hate back in it's corner," Sara Hassane, 17, said. "Just pure evil and again it has no place in this world and it's just sad," San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said. He and more than a dozen of his officers surrounded the event, along with snipers on the roof of nearby buildings, ensuring the crowd felt safe."We have officers out here making sure we don't have a copycat or anyone tries to do anything," he said.Though fear, still permeated the crowd. "Is this going to happen again? Is this the beginning or the end or...?" Hassane said. Her father runs a San Diego mosque and she said everytime she comes in to worship, she told 10News she fears she won't leave and see her family again.While they prayed, two women told me they asked Allah for peace for the victims and love from one another, ending hate. 1108

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For his 97th birthday one of Ed Stankowski's sons asked if he'd like to visit the USS Midway. The WWII veteran was on the ship for her maiden voyage in 1945. “He shot him down initially and says no I can’t go, you know I can't do that, he says, how am I going to get around?" said Paul Stankowski, another one of Ed's sons. “By 7 o' clock the next morning he was calling my brother up and says, hey when can we go!”Surrounded by four generations, Ed traveled from Wisconsin to San Diego. He got a private tour of the ship and told stories along the way. “Ha! My first night at sea I was seasick like a dog!" remembers Ed.One of the first stops on the tour was visiting the area he once worked in. “I was a Radioman, I was teaching the new recruits the radio code, international Morse code, and the procedure that they use for communicating," said Ed. Ed says he enjoyed his time in the Navy and that being back on the ship brought back memories. “I was very happy to get on a ship like that. It was the biggest ship we had in the Navy at the time and something to be a part of.” 1105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. called his son’s opponent in the November election a threat to national security to his face on Tuesday.Hunter Sr., the father of Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, held what he called a “security briefing” on Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar across from the U.S.S Midway Museum. Campa-Najjar is running against Duncan D. Hunter for his seat in the 50th Congressional District. Congressman Hunter and his wife Margaret are currently facing 60 federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy.
