SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) may pose a new threat in plans for at-home learning this fall.AB 5 was created to help turn some gig workers, or freelancers turn into employees with benefits.The bill has been met with controversy as it has impacted thousands of freelance workers across California, and now it could change how tutors can be hired.“Many parents are scrambling right now to find out how do they help their children keep pace,” said Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.DeMaio held a press conference in Escondido with a group of parents, teachers, and education advocates by his side, calling for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to suspend AB 5.“This is absurd that the governor is allowing an environment where parents have to run the risk for violating AB 5, a state law, facing penalties and fines for doing so, just because they’re trying to help their children learn,” he said.DeMaio said parents who want a tutor for their child during this challenging time might be required to hire them as employees, not independent contractors.He has created an online petition and urges people to sign it before it’s sent to the governor.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez authored AB 5 and sent the following statement to ABC 10News in response to DeMaio’s press conference. 1299
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Firefighters in California are racing to slow the spread of wildfires that burned nearly one million acres in a week and destroyed hundreds of homes. The fires have killed five people, torched nearly 700 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands from their houses. Light winds, cooler nighttime weather helped fire crews make a bit of progress on Saturday. But their efforts could be hurt by warm, dry weather, erratic wind gusts and lightning in the forecast. Firefighters are beginning to get help from other states and President Trump issued a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One month after the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, the husband of one of the victims is speaking out for the very first time. Dr. Pat Davis is a well-known dentist in the community. He lost his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law in that tragic collapse. Davis says he’s still in a state of healing. But despite the pain of losing his family members, he is now urging local leaders to come up with a plan, so no family has to go through this again. “It’s a terrible thing to experience,” says Davis. “I can’t think of a worse situation that could of happened to me as a family man.”The Davis family was out for a day at the beach back on August 2nd. Davis’ wife Julie, daughter Annie Clave and Sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis were sitting under the cliff when it gave out, killing all three women. “People in my family have been down to Grandview beach a thousand times, over the last 25 years,” says Davis. “We’ve never looked at it as being a place that was really dangerous.”Annie Clave’s friend, Tiffany Rogers, was also at the beach that day. She held back tears describing her three friends. ““Three extraordinary women who had just everything, just beautiful, so beautiful on the inside,” says Rogers. As part of healing, Dr. Davis says his new purpose in life is to find a solution to stabilize the bluffs. He supports options like cutting off some access to the beach, sand replenishment, or putting a barrier wall along the cliffs. Just this past weekend, there have been two more bluff collapses, in Encinitas and Torrey Pines State Beach. A couple of weeks ago, Davis made a passionate plea before the Encinitas City Council to take action. Thursday afternoon, he shared his concerns with Congressman Mike Levin who is fighting to get federal funding to shore up the bluffs. “It’s not a question of if this is going to happen. It’s when it’s going to happen again,” says Davis. “All you have to do is go walk along our beaches up here; you see cliffs that look like they could fall at any time.” 2034
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt.She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt.After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic.Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot.While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt.
