SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Business owners across San Diego County were bracing for the possibility of shifting back into the most restrictive purple tier Tuesday.The county barely avoided the move and can stay in the red tier for now.“The up and down is very difficult to run any business without having any known information about what the future brings,” said Scott Lutwak, CEO of Fit Athletic Club, which has five locations in the county. “It’s been just a rollercoaster of open and close again.”If the county had to move back into the purple tier, gyms and fitness centers would have to go back to outdoor operations only.“It’s not easy to just move all the equipment that you had inside and move it into your parking lot and create a gym,” he said.Under the red tier, they can operate inside at 10 percent capacity. Lutwak said that’s still just not enough.“This number has been a very difficult number for our industry to digest because we simply cannot operate at 10 percent of our capacity.”Restaurants were also set to move back outside if we hit the purple tier. Under the red, they can offer indoor dining at 25 percent capacity.“There’s no clear path to 100 percent, there’s no plan to get us back open, and that’s really shocking to us,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop.She said her East Village business would not survive another shutdown.Weber said California’s color-coded tier system makes things more difficult for already struggling business owners, as they’re constantly worrying about what could happen next.“We need to fix this, we’re just going to be on this seesaw,” she said.While San Diego County teeters between the red and purple tiers with no orange or yellow in sight yet, both Lutwak and Weber hope county leaders and health officials can take back local control.“If we use the governor’s formula, our businesses are basically never going to be able to reopen,” said Lutwak. 1943

SAN DIEGO, California — The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aid, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As the heat wave continues across San Diego County, businesses operating outside are forced to deal with another challenge during this pandemic.While the county has been removed from the state’s monitoring list, no guidance on reopening businesses has been provided, so many continue to work outside.“It’s super-hot,” said Elise Ha, owner of Master Hair & Nails in Ramona. By noon the temperature had reached over 100 degrees, causing discomfort for employees, and slowing down her business.“Not everybody can handle the heat,” she said “It’s brutal.”Ha said working in the heat is a new struggle businesses are facing, especially having to move equipment back and forth to set up outside every day.“I almost fainted because of the heat,” she said. “I can’t wait to back inside.”For now she's using wet towels to cool down and offering cold water to clients.ABC 10News spotted utility workers in Alpine using umbrellas to shield themselves from the scorching sun as temperatures continued to climb Tuesday.The high heat and humidity is making things uncomfortable across the county and the dry fuel causing concerns of fire danger, still some are managing to get by.“We still get a rush,” said Carlos Legaspi, a cook at Tapatio Mexican Grill in Alpine. “We get a lot of city workers and construction workers and stuff that come in for lunch.”Legaspi said the restaurant owners moved tables outdoors before it was required by the state as a safety precaution.While it may be uncomfortable currently, he said things have been running smoothly and the employees have adapted to the changes.“It’s super hot, it’s like 100 degrees right now,” he said before noon Tuesday. “People are kind of used to it now.”As the heat wave continues, SDG&E is urging everyone to limit energy use to avoid power outages.You can do your part by turning off unnecessary lights, precooling your home early in the day, and setting your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher in the afternoon. 1997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Bridging the gap between the community and the police department, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the men and women who patrol their streets every day. Daniel Palmer and Russ Connelly reminisced the good old days when the original owners from the 1950s took good care of the then-new Fairmount Park community. "Being in the area that is in the center of everything, it's very desirable," said Connelly, president of the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association. But as the years went on and the homes changed hands, so did the vibe of the neighborhood."The streets were dirty and the houses were getting more dilapidated," Palmer said. Palmer said there were numerous reports of drugs, break-ins, and speeding problems along Parrot Street."We have a straight part of a downhill side of the street called the 'Parrot Way speedway,'" Connelly said. "A person was hit and run just a couple of hundred yards from my house," Palmer said. But the moment they shared their concerns with patrol officers, they said something changed. Instead of merely ticketing offenders, they said the officers took the time to engage with the community."I think that's had an effect on a lot of the neighbors because they suddenly seem to slow down, watch for traffic, watch what's going on," Connelly said. "You see people putting a coat of paint on their house. You see people picking up their yards. People are happier. They feel more secure," Palmer said. So as a token of their appreciation and hard work, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the Mid-City police officers and elected officials who make their area safe. Thank you, they said, for making Fairmount Park the desirable, sweet community it once was. "It's more of a family environment than it was five to six years ago. In all honesty, it's a lot cleaner. People are more friendly. There's more participation, more interaction. (KGTV) - It started when Amber Gilles posted a photo of San Diego Starbucks barista Lenin Gutierrez with the caption “Meet lenen from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I’m not wearing a mask. Next time I will wait for cops and bring a medical exemption.”A stranger in Orange County, Matt Cowan, said he wanted to donate a few dollars to the barista in tip money, so he started a GoFundMe. As the photo on Facebook filled with hundreds of thousands of interactions and comments from people supporting the barista, the tip money eventually hit more than 0,000 to be donated to the barista. And I do have asthma as well, and I do get mask-acne. So there’s several things going on and not only that but it doesn’t even work.”She provided ABC 10News with two documents to prove her medical exemption. One is a pelvic exam from 2015 with results that say “probable exophytic fibroid arising from the anterior wall of the uterus measuring 2.9 cm size.” and “simple 2.5 cm left ovarian cyst.” A second piece of paper is a handwritten note with letterhead from a San Diego chiropractor who she asked not be named. The hand written note reads “Amber has underlying breath conditions that prevent her from wearing a mask or any type of facial covering whatsoever. Please contact me if have any questions.”When that chiropractor who wrote the note was called, he said he could not discuss her situation. When Gilles was asked why a chiropractor gave her a breathing-related medical exemption, she responded “because they are dedicated to providing non-invasive personalized care and treatment. They are real doctors.”When asked if she has an apology or message to the public, Gilles said “No absolutely not. I feel like I need the apology. I’ve been discriminated against, I’m the one who’s sick.”Gilles said she's spoken to a few lawyers about taking her case for getting half of the money but said they're all expensive so she started her own GoFundMe to try to raise money.WATCH: Lenin gets 0,000 2520
