Pepe the frog, the once-innocent cartoon that was appropriated as a mascot of the alt-right, is at the center of a new legal battle.Matt Furie, the character's creator is suing InfoWars, the media company helmed by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. In the lawsuit, filed Monday, Furie alleges copyright infringement stemming from a stylized poster sold on the Infowars website. The .95 poster features a depiction of Pepe alongside other MAGA "heroes" drawn by artist Jon Allen, including Donald Trump, Roger Stone, Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter and Jones himself."The establishment wants this taken down," the description of the poster reads. "Instead, celebrate the historic victory and frame this conversation starter in your home!''According to the civil complaint, "Furie did not authorize the use of the Pepe image or character in this poster, and does not approve of the association of Pepe with Alex Jones or any of the other figures shown in this poster, or the 'MAGA' slogan."In an audio statement published on the InfoWars YouTube channel, Jones calls the lawsuit "frivolous" and part of a larger attempt by media outlets to make Infowars "public enemy number one.""We did not create the posters, that are protected speech, that are transformative," Jones says, stating the use of the frog in an item for sale "is 100% protected by the courts, protected by the first amendment, protected by fair use."Furie has tried desperately to rescue his laid-back frog from the swamp of alt-right and neo-Nazi troll patois, even going as far as "killing" the character in a 2017 cartoon. However, like the Hydra (both Lernaean and Marvel-esque), the beheading of the chief Pepe has only resulted in more spawn, as both the cartoon and general frog imagery live on in alt-right and white nationalist circles.Even Gab, a "free speech social network" that serves as a safe space for such folks, features a frog in its logo.Furie's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and a permanent injunction against any further copyright infringements regarding his beleaguered creation.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida man is on a mission to do something nobody else has ever done: become the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman.Chris Nikic has become an inspiration to people around the world and it started with a simple mission.Nik Nikic encouraged his son to push himself 1% more each day.“We came up with this concept of just get a little better today than yesterday,” Nik explained. Now, 21-year-old Chris is about to do something incredible. On November 7, he’ll swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2 mile marathon in Panama City Beach.“I want to inspire others so that they can be like me and so that one day they can do it too,” Chris said with a smile. If he completes the race within 17 hours, Chris will be the first person with Down Syndrome to ever finish an Ironman. He also has a message for the other competitors: “You better watch out, because I’m going to beat you!”“Really, you’re going to beat all of them?” his dad asked.“Yeah!” Chris answered enthusiastically.Chris has spent several months swimming off the coast of Pinellas County as he trains with coach Dan Grieb for the big race and gets used to the choppy Gulf of Mexico waters.“I’ve learned that you can teach anybody anything if you’re willing to love them through their disability or love them through their struggle,” Grieb added.Chris has been documenting his journey on social media. Thousands of people all around the world have sent him messages of support, including many parents of children with Down Syndrome who say Chris is motivating their kids to also strive for excellence.“They say I’m their hero,” Chris added.Chris is already brainstorming his next target: Competing in the 2022 Special Olympics and finding a special someone to share all these accomplishments with.“I want to get married. I’m not waiting anymore. I want to find a hot blonde,” he said with a hearty chuckle.Shane Facteau says Chris will join a long list of incredible people to finish the race including the oldest finisher, 85-year-old Hiromu Inada.“Chris is joining a long lineage of very interesting and unique people who have challenged themselves,” Facteau said.“It’s really helped me learn that some of the greatest among us are people that we label with words like disability,” Grieb added.Chris says he continues to strive for excellence by never quitting, overcoming his fears and smiling all along the way. He also has an impeccable sense of humor. For example, he says running is his favorite of the three activities, “because it makes my butt cute and the ladies like that!”This story originally reported by Sarah Hollenbeck on abcactionnews.com. 2689

Papa John's is breaking up with the NFL.The pizza chain, which last year blamed slumping sales on the NFL's handling of player protests, is ending its sponsorship of the league."While the NFL remains an important channel for us, we have determined that there are better ways to reach and activate this audience," CEO Steve Ritchie said a conference call to discuss the company's quarterly earnings.Papa John's has been a league sponsor since 2010. It will keep its partnerships with 22 of the individual teams.Last fall, then-CEO John Schnatter received heavy criticism after he said Papa John's sales were hurt by the NFL's handling of protests by players who knelt during the National Anthem."This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago," Schnatter told investors at the time. "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country."The company later apologized."The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said on Twitter. "That definitely was not our intention."Schnatter left the company at the end of the year.Ritchie said the parting was mutual. The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Papa John's reported Tuesday that North American sales were down 3.9% from a year ago. The stock has lost a third of its value since June."We have really got a lot of key learnings on how we can invest our dollars more appropriately," Ritchie added. "So we thank the NFL for all the efforts and the partnership that we've had over the last seven years, and we'll continue to be very prominent on NFL game days as we move forward" in a different way.Papa John's stock was down almost 6% after hours. 1775

PACIFIC BEACH (CNS) - A family fight ended with a man being stabbed today in Pacific Beach.Investigators say the relatives were in a park at Crown Point at midnight when an argument broke out. It's unclear what the disagreement was about, but a 25-year-old man ended up with two stab wounds, police said.``Everyone fled in different directions,'' said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department, describing how the family members dispersed along the 3700 block of Crown Point Drive. The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition, he said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SDPD Northern Division at 858-552-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 701

Passengers were able to travel on a Delta flight from the US to Europe without quarantining on Tuesday, assuming they passed three coronavirus tests. The flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam, the first between the two locales that does not require quarantine since the onset of the pandemic, required passengers to be negative from a PCR coronavirus test in the previous five days, and receive a negative result from a rapid coronavirus test at the airport the day of the flight. A second PCR test is then administered upon arrival, and passengers are not required to quarantine once receiving a negative result.Delta is also launching a similar program for flights between Atlanta and Rome this week. Passengers bound for Rome are required to take a PCR test within 72 of the flight in addition to being administered a rapid test at the airport. Travelers then must also receive a negative result via a rapid test upon arrival in Rome.“Air travel is the backbone of the global economy. In normal times, it supports more than 87 million jobs and contributes to .5 trillion in GDP worldwide,” said Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s Senior Vice President -Alliances and International. “The arrival of a vaccine is fantastic news, but it will take time for it to become widely available around the world. It’s for this reason we have worked tirelessly with the authorities and our partners to create a blueprint for travel corridors that will enable air travel to safely resume.”The flights are intended for those traveling for essential reasons, such as for certain specified work, health and education reasons. 1606
