SPRING VALLEY (KGTV) -- Some neighbors in Spring Valley want the county to do more to address the large cluster of homeless tents at Lamar Park. Residents say the park’s homeless population has skyrocketed in recent months. At least two dozen tents lined Bancroft Drive outside the park gates Tuesday morning.“Our heart goes out to the homeless people, but when there’s drugs going on, people finding needles, the dogs are running loose, you can’t even bring your kids over to enjoy the park,” said neighbor Joe Fearce.RELATED: Del Mar neighbors aid woman living in car with 300 pet ratsThe county has posted signs saying it will clear the park January 13 for a major cleaning, but Fearce and other residents say that tactic has failed before.“They came in two or three Tuesdays ago. They cleaned everything out. By 3 o’clock, [the homeless people] were all back and then some,” Fearce said. “They know they can’t be arrested if there’s nowhere for them to go.”Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court solidified a lower court’s ruling that protects the rights of homeless people to camp in parks or on sidewalks if there is no other shelter available. San Diego County has a shortage of shelter bed space.RELATED: Businesses battling homeless in Mission Hills“I’m very concerned about the homeless camps in the Lamar Park area and I’m working with the Sheriff’s Department and other county agencies to address them,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob in a statement. “There have been previous cleanups at the park, but short-term efforts aren’t enough.”Supervisor Jacob said the county recently launched an “intensive outreach effort” to connect the homeless with services and potential housing. “We’re now putting together a long-term approach based on the lessons learned.”“Many of these folks have serious, chronic needs and it’s important that we break the cycle of homelessness, addiction, medical emergencies and incarceration,” she added.RELATED: Theft victim hunts for stolen bikes in 'homeless hotel'With so many homeless people clustered together, churches and non-profit groups know Lamar Park is a hotspot where they can help. On Tuesday morning, a volunteer with Joseph’s Storehouse dropped off boxes of food.“It’s not something that only happens to people on drugs or alcohol. Anybody is just one medical emergency or two paychecks away from being in the same position,” said Terri Pumphrey. 2410

Smash Mouth says they've received hate mail from fans after taking part in a concert during an event that's since been linked to the spread of more than 100 cases of COVID-19.The band performed an Aug. 9 concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in front of a closely-grouped crowd. Many of those in attendance were not wearing masks. During the performance, lead singer Steve Harwell was heard saying, "f*** that Covid s***."In the weeks since the event, at least 103 cases of COVID-19 have been linked directly to the Sturgis rally. And while it's unclear how many of those cases (if any) are linked directly to the Smash Mouth concert, the band has faced criticism since its performance.Earlier this week, the band posted a video of "recent fan mail" that they've received. It included an expletive-filled note calling the group "selfish," along with a smashed CD.Note: The Instagram post below contains explicit language. 947

Someone out there is sitting on a lottery ticket worth more than .5 billion, but has not stepped forward to claim the prize, according to ABC News. On Oct. 23, a single winning ticket was purchased in South Carolina for the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history. The ticket is also the single most valuable lottery ticket in US history. "We have not heard that the winner in South Carolina has come forward," Mega Millions administrator Seth Elkin told ABC News. The winner has 180 days to claim the prize. That means the winning ticket does not have to be claimed until April. If no winner comes forward, each participating state in the Mega Millions game will get back all the money that state contributed to the unclaimed jackpot, the lottery says on its website. The amount of money that goes unclaimed in state lottery programs is quite staggering. Nearly billion went unclaimed during a 12-month period from late 2016 through early 2017, lottery expert Brett Jacobson told CNN. While most of the unclaimed lottery winnings are from smaller prizes, there have been a few notable examples of massive jackpots going unclaimed. The largest known unclaimed lottery ticket was sold in Georgia in 2011 worth million. Elkin told ABC News that it would be prudent for whoever is holding the winning lottery ticket to sign it, keep it somewhere safe and consult a financial advisor before claiming the prize.  1490

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Several United States government agencies issued an alert on Friday to financial institutions about a North Korea-backed hacking group known as the BeagleBoyz. In a joint statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) said the hackers steal money through fraudulent bank transfers and ATM cashouts throughout several countries, including the United States."Since February 2020, North Korea has resumed targeting banks in multiple countries to initiate fraudulent international money transfers and ATM cashouts," the agencies said in the release. "The recent resurgence follows a lull in bank targeting since late 2019. This advisory provides an overview of North Korea’s extensive, global cyber-enabled bank robbery scheme, a short profile of the group responsible for this activity, in-depth technical analysis, and detection and mitigation recommendations to counter this ongoing threat to the Financial Services sector."Active since 2014, the group stole million from the Bank of Bangladesh in 2016, and were responsible for the FastCash ATM attacks in 2018, the agencies said. The group has attempted to steal nearly billion since at least 2015, the alert said."Any BeagleBoyz robbery directed at one bank implicates many other financial services firms in both the theft and the flow of illicit funds back to North Korea," the alert stated.According to the warning, the hackers have also targeted financial institutions in Argentina, Chile, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain. 1629
