SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native is back home after the Camp Fire forced him out of his school. Angel Gonzalez is a third-year student at Chico State University. Campus officials canceled class on Thursday when the fire broke out and then announced the campus would be closed for two weeks. The university is not currently threatened by the Camp Fire but the air quality is poor. Gonzalez says leaving the campus was chaotic and crowded with everyone trying to get out. He’s now worried about his professors, many who own properties in Paradise.Classes at Chico State are set to resume on November 26th, the Monday after Thanksgiving. 680
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection started Tuesday construction on its second border wall project along the U.S-Mexico border. The 14-mile long project consists of crews replacing existing barriers with new 30-foot tall steel bollards. The contract was awarded to Texas-based construction company SLSCO Ltd. The secondary wall project runs just north of the primary fence replacement project which started last summer. 446
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two more people have died from the flu in San Diego County, bringing this season’s total to 11, according to County News Center. According to health officials, a 74-year-old man who was vaccinated died from complications from influenza B on December 31. A 64-year-old man also died from complications due to influenza A on January 3. The 64-year-old man hadn’t received his vaccination, according to the county. Overall, flu activity was down last week compared to previous weeks. Last year at this time, 91 people had died from the flu. Flu cases last week fell to 257 from 369 the previous week. Overall, just over 2,000 cases of the flu have been reported so far this season, which fell dramatically from more than 10,300 by this time last year. “It’s not too late in the season to get your flu shot,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Flu activity can last until April or May and the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others around you from influenza.”The CDC recommends that everyone 6-months-old and older get a flu shot every year. Doctors at UC San Diego Health hope to make getting a second opinion easier and more affordable through their new Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program. "They either feel affirmed in the clinical opinion they've already received or maybe have access to a surgical treatment that might not otherwise be offered to them," said Dr. Alex Khalessi, Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health. Through a secure online platform, UC San Diego Health offers easy access to world-renowned neurosurgeons through the program.The service costs patients 0, which Dr. Khalessi says is a few hundred dollars less than other programs nationwide. He says their goal is to make the program accessible to those who need it, even those thousands of miles away. "This is really an opportunity I think to give patients who are dealing with a problem they've never had to think of before a day in their lives, access to a person who spends every day thinking about that problem," said Dr. Khalessi.San Diego resident Glenn Callan credits a second opinion from Dr. Khalessi's team for saving his wife Patricia's life.While in remission for breast cancer doctors at their original San Diego hospital discovered a large tumor in Patricia's brain, but said the tumor was inoperable. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --A 26-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after police say he stabbed a 50-year-old in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.According to police, the two got into a fight on the 500 block of Fifth Avenue around 10:30 p.m.That’s when the suspect, identified as Matthew Morrow, walked up to the victim and stabbed him several times in the back, police say.Police were able to find Morrow and arrest him for assault with a deadly weapon.The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 527
