President Donald Trump's stance on guns has not wavered a day after he set up a meeting with National Rifle Association officials, the White House said Friday.Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA's lobbying arm Thursday evening, who quickly tweeted that Trump and Pence "don't want gun control."That's an apparent shift from Trump's comments during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Wednesday, when he signaled his support for policies -- such as strengthening background checks to raising the minimum age to buy certain guns and taking guns away from the mentally ill -- that are vehemently opposed by the gun lobby.Asked if Trump's thinking has changed since Wednesday's meeting, Sanders said, "not that I'm aware of." She said the only specific promise Trump made to the NRA was that "he'll support the Second Amendment. That's not something that he's backed away from. The background check system is something that he's still very much interested in improving."  1045

President Donald Trump will make two campaign stops in the upper Midwest Monday as he attempts to sway voters in crucial battleground states of Minnesota and Wisconsin.Trump's campaign stops will come the same day that Democrats will open their party convention — a convention originally scheduled to take place in nearby Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but which has since been rescheduled to take place virtually.According to the official White House schedule, Trump will first travel to Mankato, Minnesota and deliver remarks at North Star Aviation. He'll then fly to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he'll deliver a speech at the city's airport.Trump is expected to deliver a speech on "jobs and the economy" at both locations, according to the official White House schedule. The state of Wisconsin proved critical to Trump's victory in 2016, where he broke through the Democrats' "Blue Wall" in the Upper Midwest and edged out a close victory in the state. The state could again prove critical in 2020 election, and recent polls show presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden with a slight edge in the state.Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton carried Minnesota during the 2016 election.Trump's comments come the same day that an ABC/Washington Post poll showed Biden leading nationally with 53% to 41% lead. 1308

President Donald Trump slammed basketball star LeBron James on Friday night over his appearance on CNN this week."Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do," Trump tweeted.James appeared on Lemon's show Monday, and the interview was re-aired Friday night, shortly before Trump tweeted. 380

Race relations is one issue impacting voters as they head to the polls for the midterms next week.A recent poll from the Associated Press found 77 percent of Democrats and about 50 percent of Republicans say they're dissatisfied with race relations.During a speech this week, President Donald Trump stirred up another controversy.“They have a word. It sort of became old fashion. It's called a nationalist. And I say, really, we're not supposed to use that word?” President Trump said. “You know what? I am, I'm a nationalist, OK?”The president says he used the word because he's proud of our country, but some say the word is a signal to white nationalists and points back to the president's comments after the Nazi rally in Charlottesville last year.“He's allowing white nationalist to feel comforted in those words,” says Andre Perry, with the Brookings Institution. “It's clear he's using a divisive rhetoric to rally his base, and that rhetoric is racist.”But for the past year, Candace Owens with the conservative, non-profit organization Turning Point USA, has defended Trump.“No matter what he says, they spin it,” Owens says. “No matter how he says it, they spin it. You saw that with [the] Charlottesville thing. What he said was factually accurate, but they spun it like he was supporting the KKK.”At the White House, President Trump recently hosted a summit with young black conservatives like Owens.“Just because somebody thinks differently than you does not make them a racist,” Owens argues. “And when you keep continually calling people racist, what you're actually doing is diminishing the experiences that real people who lived through eras like that actually had.”“Black Americans on many social issues are very conservative, but until Trump rids himself of the very racists policies, blacks should not find comfort in that administration,” Perry argues. 1886

President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser hosted white nationalist Peter Brimelow at his home last weekend, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.Brimelow, who is known for espousing anti-immigrant ideals and for his role in the white nationalist website VDare, attended Larry Kudlow's birthday party in Connecticut, Kudlow told The Post.Kudlow said he'd known Brimelow "forever" but that "we would never have invited him" had he known about Brimelow's white nationalist ties, according to the paper.Kudlow also told The Post that Brimelow's immigration beliefs are "a side of Peter that I don't know." "I totally, utterly disagree with that point of view and have my whole life. I'm a civil rights Republican," he said, according to The Post. The Post noted that Kudlow's party took place a day after reports surfaced that Trump speechwriter Darren Beattie had left the White House following questions surrounding his attendance of a conference frequented by white nationalists.Beattie previously confirmed to CNN's KFile that he had spoken at the 2016 H.L. Mencken Club Conference, a small annual gathering that started in 2008 and is regularly attended by well-known white nationalists such as Richard Spencer. Brimelow was also listed as a speaker at the conference. Other speakers included regular contributors to VDare.Brimelow told CNN on Tuesday that he has known Kudlow for "nearly 40 years.""I regard him as a personal friend. They knew my first wife, who died, and were most kind to Lydia when I remarried. We agreed to disagree on immigration long ago," Brimelow said. The Post reports that Brimelow does not call himself a white nationalist but had told the Harvard Crimson about the website VDare: "So I don't regard us as a 'white nationalist' site although we certainly publish a few writers I would regard as 'white nationalist' in that they stand up for whites just as Zionists, Black Nationalists do for Jews, Blacks etc."Kudlow was asked by The Washington Post how he would explain the situation to Trump, to which he replied: "Just the way I explained it now, hiding nothing." 2108
