LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities are looking for help identifying a man they say pointed a finger at a 7-Eleven clerk and demanded cash early Wednesday before leaving empty handed.It happened around 2 a.m. at the store located on Bonita Beach Road near Imperial Shores Boulevard.According to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, the man walked into the store with a red shirt covering his face, and approached the clerk with a pointed finger.  The man demanded all the cash from the register, but the clerk refused and the man left the store.He was seen riding a white bicycle north on Imperial Shores Boulevard.The man is described as being in his early 20s, approximately 5 foot 8 inches and weighing 165 pounds.  748

LANATANA, Florida — A man jumped out of bushes and randomly attacked a woman with a chainsaw around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Lantana police said.The woman, who is in her 60s, was walking along Hypoluxo Road near Seacrest Boulevard when the man attacked her, according to police.The woman was taken to a local hospital for with serious injuries to the chest and hands but is expected to survive.Lantana police have the attacker in custody. They identified him as 20-year-old Juan Cabrera Jr."He actually made a comment that he woke up this morning, went and got something to eat. We can't confirm or deny if he's got any kind of mental illness or not. But he did make a comment to the investigator that he saw the lady in the area and he quote stated, 'I'm going to end this woman's life,' " Lantana Police Chief Sean Scheller said.The incident occurred near the Super 8 Motel at 1200 Hypoluxo Blvd., where the suspect was staying.The woman said she did not know the man and thought he was a landscaper, police said. LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Stacey Recktenwald recently wrote Apple to thank the tech giant for its life-saving feature.  1601

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Four former students are suing the San Diego Unified School District and a former teacher, claiming he sexually assaulted them in high school. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner interviewed one of his accusers who says the school district failed to protect her. “When I was a senior at La Jolla High School in the year of 2003, I was sexually assaulted by my physics teacher,” says former student Loxie Gant.She’s one of the four women who are now suing the former teacher and the district, claiming the district had numerous opportunities to punish or report his behavior, but failed to do so.Attorney Mark Boskovich tells 10News, “The school district knew about these sexual assaults because the students reported [them]. This is not one of those cases where people didn't come forward. They did.”10News is not naming the former teacher because he has not been criminally charged.He declined to offer us any comment on the lawsuit.According to the suit, in 2003 two students reported that he put his hands down a female student's pants, but the complaint alleges that even after the district substantiated the complaint, it never reported it to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office or California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.The lawsuit states that between roughly 2003 and 2014, multiple female students, including Gant, reported being sexually assaulted by the same former teacher. Their attorney says he was allowed to keep teaching until he retired three years ago and now collects an annual pension of more than ,000.“I’ve been trying for years to get San Diego Unified to admit their faults and take responsibility for what happened,” adds Gant. According to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the former teacher's credentials were revoked last year because of misconduct, but the details of the misconduct and whether it’s related to the allegations of sexual assault are not being disclosed to 10News.
