SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled several spot fires that popped up near Interstate 8 in Alpine Thursday afternoon.The vegetation fire, called the Victoria Fire, started near I-8 and Victoria Drive around 4 p.m., heavily impacting traffic in the area.Crews from Cal Fire San Diego and other fire agencies attacked the flames from the ground and air and were able to get a handle on the blaze by 5:30 p.m.All eastbound lanes of I-8 at Willows Road were shut down for a few hours as fire crews worked. The lanes reopened before 8 p.m.While the Victoria Fire only grew to two acres, it left some families on edge as the heat continues throughout the week.An excessive heat warning goes into effect Friday through Monday for the inland areas to the deserts. A spokesperson for Cal Fire San Diego said they are fully staffed to handle any fires that may happen.The cause of the Victoria Fire is still under investigation. 929

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Gusty Santa Ana winds and dry conditions prompted the National Weather Service to declare a Red Flag Warning for parts of San Diego County.A Fire Weather Watch was initially set to take effect Thursday, but NWS officials -- citing Santa Ana winds and low humidity -- updated the declaration into a Red Flag Warning.The warning is scheduled to take effect Thursday at 10 a.m. and will expire at 10 p.m. Friday. As a result, Cal Fire is increasing staffing this week. LATEST WEATHER FORECASTNWS officials said, “Santa Ana winds will develop Thursday with peak winds arriving Thursday night into Friday morning before gradually decreasing Friday afternoon and evening. A very dry air mass will spread into southern California on Thursday with lowest daytime humidity on Friday around 5 percent.”According to NWS officials, the Red Flag Warning will impact the San Diego region’s mountain and inland valleys.“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly with extreme fire behavior possible. They include Dan McKinney, Jackie Robinson, Magdalena Ecke, McGrath Family, and the Mission Valley branches.But with ever-changing rules by the State and County, staff and members of the YMCA understand that this reopening may be short-lived.Twice a day, Doug Harrigan would come to the Mission Valley YMCA. But since the COVID-19 quarantine began, he switched to working out at home."It's been rough," Harrigan said.Now he's back."I had a chance to talk to the members that I used to see on a regular basis, and it just felt good to do a real workout in a gym rather than my living room."Starting July 1, 2020, Mission Valley, Dan McKinney (La Jolla), Jackie Robinson (Mt. Hope), Magdalena Ecke (Encinitas), and McGrath Family (Spring Valley) YMCA branches are open, at a modified capacity."Masks required, health check stations, signage everywhere, and we've separated the fitness equipment to the 6-foot social distancing requirements," Assistant Executive Director of the Mission Valley YMCA, Jason Milosh said.At this point, group exercise classes and pools remain closed.Last week, some branches, including Mission Valley, opened up its Kids Day Camps. This year, space is extremely limited due to social distancing rules, and there will not be any field trips. But parents are happy that they are keeping busy."Summer learning loss has been aggravated by the challenges that our school system has had in the last few months of school," Molish said. "So, we have incorporated some more academic components to our summer camps to help kids bridge that summer learning loss."But with the State and County coming out with new rules, seemingly every week, gyms and community centers like the YMCA, must be flexible."Re-closing is a possibility, and we are prepared for that," Milosh said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Effective August 31, some businesses throughout San Diego County are allowed to reopen under newly-issued state guidance.Beginning Monday, places of worship, restaurants, museums, gyms, and hair and nail salons, are among entities that can begin operating indoors.Organizations that plan to reopen under the new guidance are advised to update their safe reopening plan.
