WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is deploying agents from the border to “sanctuary” cities that are hindering stepped up immigration enforcement. Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Matthew Albence announced the use of Customs and Border Patrol agents in the interior of the country on Friday. Albence said the move is necessary because sanctuary cities are refusing to cooperate with ICE in the capture of immigrants. He says border agents will “supplement” ICE. Albence did not disclose the cities. But an official speaking on condition of anonymity said they include San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and New York. 649

We're about a month into the school year and teachers are struggling to keep children up to speed amid the pandemic. We spoke with a principal at an elementary school in Arizona who says students are about five to six months behind. Some kids who should be reading by now, simply are not.She says when you think about it, most students have not been inside a classroom since March. One challenge for teachers has been teaching at-home students and giving one-on-one attention to those in the classroom. The other challenge has been technology.“It’s day to day, whether or not technology works,” said principal Sarah Lewis. “And if you think about it, we've been hybrid for about three weeks now, but before that, we were all digital learning. We would have full days where we wouldn't have any technology, so basically we would have to tell the kids, go into Google Classroom and practice your multiplication facts.”Lewis says it's tough to hear young kids are learning on their parents’ cell phones, because they don't have a computer. However, she says she's proud of how fast teachers became tech savvy, as well as the level of understanding from most parents and their willingness to be flexible. She's also proud of the kids.“Five-year-olds do not understand that you cannot go over to your friend’s desk and ask what they're reading or coloring, but as far as wearing the mask and being OK when we ask them to step away or ask them to, I mean it's incredible that little kids are able to do it,” said Lewis.Lewis says she wants people to know just how difficult it is for teachers to balance teaching online students and those in the classroom. She says many are fearful of the pandemic, but realize they have a job to do. 1733

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for several of his most senior economic advisers at a press event on Tuesday afternoon. The group includes liberal economists and policy specialists who established their credentials during the previous two Democratic administrations. Biden is placing a premium on diversity in his selection of Cabinet nominees and key advisers. For treasury secretary, Biden has nominated former Fed chair Janet Yellen. She would be the first woman to lead the Treasury Department in its 231 years of existence. Tanden would be the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to lead the agency that oversees the federal budget. She currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to advancing policies that increase opportunity for Americans.Additionally, Biden has chosen Wally Adeyemo as his deputy treasury secretary. Wednesday morning people in Baltimore found the Francis Scott Key statue vandalized. According to a photographer at the statue, it was spray painted from the sidewalk to the top its columns. Francis Scott Key was a lawyer, author, and poet from Frederick, Maryland. His poem "The Defense of Fort McHenry" eventually became the United State's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner.""Racist anthem" was spray painted on the statue. Though it is rarely sung, the song's third verse does contain a reference to slavery. The Baltimore Sun reports that the graffiti appeared on the statue exactly 203 years after Key wrote the poem that inspired the national anthem. 707
